May 22, 1931 – May 21, 2011Karen Sophie Christopherson Loran died quietly on Saturday, May 21, with family by her side. Kay, as she was known by everyone, was born May 22, 1931, to Grant and Olive Christopherson in Meeteetse. She was the first born of 10 children.
She attended Meeteetse schools until she married Robert (Bob) Loran in 1948. Their first child, Nick, was born in Cody. They moved to Nebraska where they worked on the Bixby Ranch. Their next three children, Judy, Rocky and Casey, were born there. They came back to Cody where their last two children, Dixie and Shelia, were born.
They started a sheep ranch and a hunting camp. They traded sheep for cattle, then for horses. Kay was very much involved in the business, taking care of all the bookwork, keeping everyone fed and handling all the day-to-day chores. She especially loved hunting season when lots of people were around.
Kay loved to garden and grow plants. Whenever she wasn’t busy feeding hunters or chasing after kids, she could be found in the garden. She also loved crafts, knitting and crocheting. If you came to visit Grandma-Kay, you were almost sure to go home with one of her latest craft projects.
Kay is survived by her husband, Bob Loran, of Lovell; children Nick Loran, Judy (Jim) Brittain, Casey Loran and Sheila (Richard) Lipps, all of Cody, and Rocky Loran of Arizona; 13 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by brothers Ivan, Vernon, Donny, Jason, Kenny and Kim Christopherson. She was preceded in death by her parents, Grant and Olive, daughter Dixie Loran, brother Skip Christopherson and sisters Lorna Dobson and Elese Brimhall.
A viewing will be at 9 a.m. with funeral services held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 25, at the LDS church in Lovell. Burial will follow in Meeteetse. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Cancer Society in memory of her daughter Dixie.
