June 11, 1925 –Nov. 18, 2011
Calvin Connley Akin, 86, of Byron died on Friday, Nov. 18, 2011, at the Sheridan Manor.
Calvin was born on a stormy evening on June 11, 1925, to Floyd Akin and Opal Ridenour Akin on the farm that his grandfather managed in the Mitchell County Township in Asherville, Kan. A half hour after his birth, mother and newborn were taken to a cellar due to a tornado.
Calvin started school in Asherville, then attended the country school for all surrounding areas of Asherville. He graduated from grade school in Asherville. He did not graduate high school because he elected to join the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. His service started with boot camp in Great Lakes, Ill., on Nov. 21, 1942, followed by the Naval Electrician School from which he graduated in July, 1943. His service time included Salem Aphyllous Base in Salem, Mass., training on LTC, moving on to Marine Island in California and boarding his ship headed for Saipan and Guam. In February 1946 he headed back to the USA with an honorable discharge, March 2, 1946, at Norman, Okla., as a Third Class Petty Officer Electrician.
Calvin was married August 17, 1946, in Beloit, Kan., to Lois L. Axtell. This union blessed them with five children. They later divorced in 1960. On February 14, 1966, in Cody, he married Anita J. Casey. This union added three more children.
Calvin brought his family to Wyoming in 1957 to work for REA in Jeffrey City. He later moved to Thermopolis, where he went to work for Pacific Power in 1970, serving the Cody, Thermopolis and Lovell areas until retiring in 1990 after 42 years of being a lineman. Calvin raised Appaloosa horses, enjoyed farming and most of all loved his kids and grandkids.
Calvin was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Anita J. Akin, and his father, mother, stepmother, stepfather, half brother and half sister. He is survived by five children: Joyce (Don) Barnes of Sheridan, James (Kathy) Akin of Cody, Dennis (Margaret) Akin of Scottsbluff, Neb., Allen Akin of Deaver and Robert (Janet) Akin of Cody; three step children, Erin, Seana and Chris, along with 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren, one half brother, Robert, of Basin, and five half sisters, Margaret and Jennie of Arizona, Deloris of Riverton and Charlotte and Lulu of Hutchinson, Kan.
