Indoor track team opens season at Laramie

The LHS indoor track and field team competed in their first meet of the season last Friday at the Shine Invitational in Laramie. Though they had a long 7½-hour trip directly prior to the competition, a number of the LHS athletes placed and obtained personal bests at the meet.

Lovell senior Susie Robertson easily clears the bar during the high jump competition at the Shine Invitational Friday in Laramie. Robertson captured first place in the event.

Senior Susie Robertson led the Girls team with 10 points by winning the high jump. Robertson was unable to compete in any running events due to injury. “Susie jumped really well,” said head coach Josh Sanders. “We are really looking forward to having her back to run when she recovers from her injury.”

Also placing in Laramie was junior Meryk McArthur, who placed sixth in the triple jump. “Meryk has really good form” said Sanders. “Now she needs to work on her speed and she should continue to do well for us.”

Lovell had male placers in the jumps, as well. Sophomore Kade Englert placed second in the high jump and freshman Drake Welch placed second in the triple jump. “Drake had a very good start for a freshman” said Sanders. “We’re looking forward to what he can bring to our team in the future.”

The LHS throwers experienced success last Friday also. Senior AJ Montanez placed first in both the shot put and the weight throw, earning him Athlete of the Week status. Senior Schuylar Davis placed fifth in the shot put, her first time at an indoor meet. Davis also placed third in the weight throw, an event in which she holds the school record. Sophomores Katie Hoover and Jacob Price both placed in the throws, too. Hoover placed third in the shot put and fourth in the weight throw, whereas Price placed sixth in the weight throw.

Although the field aspect of the LHS track and field team was the most represented this past week, that doesn’t mean there wasn’t any excitement on the track. Freshman AJ Dickson and sophomore Brandon Dickson put on quite a show during their heat of the 1,600m race. Brandon Dickson had a comfortable lead on his teammate for most of the race and just before the end of the last lap his freshman counterpart edged him out for the better time.

“It was really exciting for our team to cheer for,” said Sanders. “It will make for good competition and a friendly rivalry.”

The LHS track and field team will compete this week in Gillette at the Campbell County Recreation Center on Saturday. Field events will start at 10:30 a.m., and running events will start at 11 a.m.
