Amir Khan of Lovell took first place in the Big Horn County Spelling Bee held last week in Greybull. Second went to David Chavis of Manderson and third to Gerardo Beltran of Cowley.
Each of the county’s five middle schools (Cloud Peak, Burlington, Rocky Mountain, Lovell and host Greybull) sent nine students to the spelling bee. Each school’s team consisted of three sixth graders, three seventh graders and three eighth graders.
The 45 contenders were put to the test in two written rounds, each consisting of 50 questions, during the morning session. The top 20 advanced to the oral round, which was held in the Greybull High School auditorium.
The top five finishers — which also included fourth place Zariah Tolman of Burlington and Emily Smith of Manderson — have been invited to participate in the Wyoming State Spelling Bee March 17 in Casper.
