The Lovell/Rocky speech and debate team traveled to Jackson to compete against 18 other schools on Feb. 10 and 11. The students had a chance to showcase their talents against 425 entries.
Dylan May and Cole Moncur made the semi-finals with their duet “Cinderella.” The Birkholz twins, Emily and Elizabeth also made the semi-finals with their duet “Wicked.”
Elizabeth performed a new piece for her humor entry. Emily won fourth place with her poetry.
Mary Schwope made it into the finals in “super congress,” where she competed for two additional rounds.
Coach Deb Fink was pleased with how well the team members did against such a large field of competition.
“All are improved, improving and getting better in every competition,” said Fink.
The students will travel to Buffalo on Feb. 24 for a two-day competition. At least 15 schools are expected to compete and Fink expects the team to do well and gain valuable experience at the meet. This will be their last meet of the season.
“I’m very pleased with how hard everyone has worked this year,” said Fink.
The team will be holding a special “open house” performance for the public on March 6 in the Lovell Elementary School Gym, starting at 6 p.m.
