Sept. 17, 1944 – March 6, 2012
A funeral service for Ralph Leon Cockrell, 67, was held on March 9 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Douglas with Bishop Darrell Locke conducting. Interment was in the Lovell Cemetery in Lovell on Saturday, March 10.
Ralph died on March 6, 2012, at Davis Hospice Center in Cheyenne after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born on Sept. 17, 1944, in Lovell to Admiral Dewey and Edna (Durfee) Cockrell. The fourth of five children and naturally athletic, Ralph graduated from Lovell High School in 1963, leaving behind a lasting legacy of basketball heroics that are still spoken of today. He attended the University of Wyoming, earning a bachelor of science degree in range conservation in 1968.
His love of the outdoors led Ralph to a career spanning three decades with the United States Forest Service. While working in Spearfish, S. D., he met Kathleen Ann Remsberg. They were married for time and all eternity in the Idaho Falls Temple in Idaho Falls on May 1, 1974.
In keeping with his love of the outdoors, Ralph was an avid hunter, a camper and a fisherman. He was also an accomplished gardener who was known for producing an annual bounty of prized raspberries. While Ralph was always willing to lend his ability to fix almost anything to those in need, his true love was having the opportunity to spend time with family, either enjoying a lively game of cribbage or simply getting caught up on the busy lives of his children.
Ralph was an active member and former bishop of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Additionally, he was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and a member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.
Ralph was survived by his beloved wife of 37 years, Kathleen, of Douglas; daughters Carolyn (Roger) Wood of Pinedale, Jennifer Cockrell of Cheyenne and Katie Cockrell of Laramie; sons Dennis (Angela) Cockrell of Jerome, Idaho, and Jonathan (Karina) Cockrell of Laramie; brother Ronald (Cindy) Cockrell of Rye, Colo.; sister Connie (Sherald) Remmich of Billings and grandchildren Dominic Cockrell, Raif Cockrell, Ronin Cockrell, Alaina Cockrell, Parker Wood and Sierra Wood.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Roberta Snell and brother Charles Cockrell.
Serving as pallbearers were Jack Stewart, Marlin Anderson, Ron Halstead, Ron Cockrell, Jon Cockrell, Dennis Cockrell, Sherald Remmich and Roger Wood.
Serving as honorary pallbearers were Dave Harring, Dick Swaner, Dominic Cockrell, Parker Wood, Raif Cockrell and Ronin Cockrell.
If desired, donations may be made in the name of Ralph Cockrell to the Davis Hospice Center, 6000 Sycamore Road, Cheyenne, WY 82001.
