Dec. 31, 1919 – May 8, 2012
Jala McLemore Stevens, 92, died on May 8, 2012 at the New Horizons Care Center in Lovell. Jala was born Dec. 31, 1919, in Lovell, the daughter of Charles Carroll McLemore and Jala Katura Burns. She graduated from Lovell High School in 1938 and later from Robertson School of Business in Dallas. After returning to Wyoming, she worked at the Ohio Refinery in Lovell.
She met Joseph Golden Stevens at a dance and they were married August 21, 1946, in the Salt Lake Temple. This happy marriage lasted 57 years. Their children are: Lynda Corrine Willis (Brent) of Inkom, Idaho, Richard “Dick” Stevens (Susan) of Granville, Ohio, Kathy Brown of Lovell, and J. Thad (Ilene) of Ft. Bridger, Wyo.
Jala worked for the Lovell School District for 31 years, where she was known as “Sarge” by her co-workers. She loved watching sports, especially basketball. During March Madness you would find her “glued” to the television. She even helped Kathy fill out the tournament bracket pool for the clinic and Kathy won! One highlight of her life was attending the Mountain West Basketball Tournament in Las Vegas at the age of 82.
At age 70 she discovered a talent for painting and she painted a treasured picture for each family member. We remember her always having her nose in a book, doing a crossword puzzle, and making baby quilts. Jala was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Jala was preceded in death by her parents; husband Golden; five sisters, Lillian McLemore, Nellie Emmett, Velma Esterholt, Martha Gould and Virginia “Desi” Hollingsworth; and one brother, Charles Burns McLemore.
She is survived by her children, 16 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews. Friends and family will miss her kind and gentle presence in their lives.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 14 at the Lovell LDS Chapel. Burial was in the Lovell Cemetery. Haskell Funeral Home in Lovell was in charge of arrangements.
