New bakery open on Main Street in Lovell

Mama’s Baked Goods was bustling Tuesday. The new bakery in the former MDU Building at 7 West Main was filled with wonderful smells of baked goods, front cabinets filled with bread, pastries, pies and cookies and the kitchen alive with dough being rolled and delicacies being prepared.

It appeared to be a successful grand opening for proprietor Amanda Ballard and her crew.

Ballard moved to Lovell in March with her 12-year-old son Anthony and a baby on the way. She loves to bake and started taking baked goods to the Lovell Farmers Market.

“I started doing the farmers market and it all just happened,” she said. “I love feeding people, so this is perfect.”

She arranged to rent the MDU building for a year and started making preparations. It took several weeks to get ready, but with a staff in place and backed by partners Larry and Nancy Blair, she was ready to roll – literally.

Mama’s Baked Goods features a number of different breads, some available daily on the shelf and others by special order: white, whole wheat, raisin, cinnamon raisin, jalapeno cheddar, jalapeno popper, cinnamon apple, cinnamon apple raisin, rosemary, rosemary and olives and others.

The bakery also offers various cookies and bars, cakes, pies, muffins and rolls, Danish rolls, croissants, scones and other pastries, including cream puff swans, caramel and cinnamon rolls, cheese cake and more.

Donuts will be offered as soon as a fryer is ready.

The bakery offers a soup of the day for lunch, served with a dinner roll. The lunch fare may expand “once we get into our routine,” she said.

Mama’s Baked Goods is open Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. The bakery will be closed on Christmas Day and the day after but will be open on Christmas Eve until noon. Special orders may be made by calling 548-6262 (548-mama).

The current staff includes Ballard, Raven Roberts, Leri Roland, Nancy Blair, Rhonda Wipf, Michaela Werner and numerous volunteers.

Roberts, a culinary school graduate, is a “huge asset,” Ballard said, and will make cakes for special occasions by order.
