Dec. 1, 1917 – Nov. 29, 2012
Zelpha Asay was born Dec. 1, 1917, the oldest daughter of Homer Aaron and Arta Sawyer Asay. Her childhood winters were spent in town but in the summer the family moved to the mountains where her father worked.
She attended school in Lovell. While in high school she met LaMar Averett. They were married Nov. 13, 1934. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. They had five children: Jeanine, Jerry, Doris, Kenny and Carol. Zelpha loved her husband and children above all else. She put them first. She kept a clean home and was a wonderful cook. She loved to garden and work in her yard.
She was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all of her life. She had many callings through the years. She loved being the secretary of the MIA the most.
When her children were mostly grown she went to work at the nursing home. She loved the people she took care of and they in turn loved her. She worked until it was time to retire.
LaMar died on Oct. 7, 1985, leaving Zelpha alone. She lived in her home independently as long as she could. The last few years she lived with her daughter and son-in-law Carol and Dale Walker. Zelpha died on Nov. 29, 2012. She was a great mother and grandmother and always made everyone feel special and loved. She will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, LaMar Averett; her parents, Homer and Arta Asay; son Kenneth LaMar Averett; daughter Jeanine Myers; daughter-in-law Sharon Averett; grandsons Allan Voyles and Mac Averett; sisters Doris Allphin and Sylva Dobbins; and great granddaughter Sara Myers.
She is survived by her son Jerry Averett of Soda Springs, Idaho; daughters Doris Voyles (Keith) of Cody and Carol Walker (Dale) of Lovell; grandchildren Bob Myers, Ken Myers, Jeanette Myers, Brenda Mock, Renee Georgius, Lynda Armstrong, Lynette Averett, Wayne Averett, Debbie Voyles, Jeff Voyles, Gwen Allphin, Russ Walker, Kevin Walker and Stephanie Montanez; and 39 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great- grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at the LDS Stake Center in Lovell. Burial was in the Lovell Cemetery. Haskell Funeral Home in Lovell was in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.haskellfuneralhome.com.
