This July and August the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area is offering several guided kayaking excursions.
“Through the Active Trails Program we have obtained equipment that will allow us to take 10 people out on the lake at a time free of charge,” Chief Interpreter Christy Fleming said. “Those who have their own non-motorized boats may join us, as well. However, total trip size is limited to 15 participants.”
All participants must be age 12 or older. All trips will cover proper paddling techniques, self-recovery of a capsized kayak and general safety precautions for non-motorized adventures on the Big Horn River.
All participants for the 2013 kayak program, even those with their own gear, must call ahead and register with the Bighorn Canyon NRA. All registrations will be taken by the rangers at the Lovell visitor center at 548-5406. Those registering are asked to know what date and time they would like to paddle before calling.
The following trips are offered:
• 6-mile, 3 to 4-hour, Horseshoe Bend to Crooked Creek and Barry’s Landing to Medicine Creek:
The trips for beginners will start with basic paddling techniques and general safety information before the group heads out for a three-hour roundtrip paddle. As well as learning from our kayaking guide there will also be an interpretive ranger along for the float providing information about the park and its rich history.
• 6-mile, 3 to 4-hour, Crooked Creek Full Moon Paddle:
On Aug. 17 participants will paddle from Horseshoe Bend to Crooked Creek under the light of a full moon. This excursion runs from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. with free camping available at Horseshoe Bend afterwards.
• 16-mile, 6 to 8-hour, Devil’s Canyon trip:
The longer trip will run from Barry’s Landing south through eight miles of slot canyon with walls that reach heights over 1,400 feet to where the Big Horn River hits Devil’s Canyon. For this trip participants will need to bring a lunch and be prepared for a long day of heavy exercise.
