Prep for Relay for Life event in full swing

Organizers of the annual Relay for Life fundraiser for the American Cancer Society hosted teams at a pre-event fundraising event held in the parking lot of the Bible Church on Saturday. The teams have ramped up their fundraising efforts as they ready themselves for the Aug. 9-10 event.

The teams will not only walk in the event, which will take place at Kevin P. Robertson Memorial Stadium starting at 7 p.m. on Aug. 9, they will also donate the funds they have raised to the American Cancer Society.

The annual event is a celebration of life, known for its beautiful display of candle-lit luminarias to honor those who have won and some who have lost their battle with cancer. Luminarias are small paper bags filled with sand and one strategically placed votive candle. When lit, the bags create a lantern effect. Cans of food will be used again this year to weigh down the bags. The food will be donated to the Lovell Food Bank after the event.

As in years past, cancer survivors from the community will lead the first lap of a walk on Friday night. The survivors lap will be followed by a caregivers lap to honor those friends and family members who supported the cancer survivors throughout their ordeal.  Afterward, colorful balloons will be released into the sky.  At approximately 10 p.m. the luminarias will be lit and will burn throughout the night as teams of individuals take turns walking continuously around the track until dawn. Throughout the evening, luminarias strategically placed on the bleachers will be rearranged to spell out words like hope, faith and other inspirational words.

Other festivities include entertainment by local artists, family oriented games, food booths, bingo, a midnight run and an early morning breakfast cooked up by the Lovell Police Dept. and the Big Horn County Sheriff’s Dept.
