Dec. 7, 1931 – Aug. 11, 2013
Ivan Clarence Asay was born in Lovell on Dec. 7, 1931, to Irvin and Dovetta Asay. After high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Bangor, Maine, where he met and married Aleta May Whitney. To this union six children were born: Sheryl, Michael, Patricia, Catherine, La Rae and Ivan Allen.
Ivan and Aleta were later divorced and she returned to Maine with the children. Ivan then married Shirlee Murphy, who had two daughters, Bobby and Diane, from a previous marriage. Ivan considered them as his own. Ivan and Shirlee were divorced in 1997.
Ivan was a bricklayer most of his life and did the block work on the D&L Motel in Byron and the masonry in the bowling alley in Lovell. He spent many years in Helena, Mont., building chimneys and other masonry jobs in that area. His health failed him and in 1997 he moved from Helena back to Lovell to be with family.
He suffered many years with emphysema, which greatly disabled him in any activity. He relied heavily on his scooter, which he affectionately called “Scooty.” He loved to take trips to town to buy groceries and other things on Scooty.
On July 31 he was stricken with a severe asthma attack and was taken to the North Big Horn Hospital in Lovell and later transferred to St. Vincent Hospital in Billings. He finally succumbed to it on Aug. 11, 2013.
He is survived by his sister, Norma Eyre of Billings; two brothers, Ernest Asay of West Jordan, Utah, and Gary (Glenda) Asay of Lovell; his children Sheryl, Michael, Patricia, Catherine, La Rae and Ivan Allen, all residing in Maine; one step-daughter, Bobbie Jones of Newcastle, Wyo.; nieces, nephews, many cousins and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings: Carma, Don, and Arnold.
His sense of humor and unique personality will be greatly missed by all.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, August 15, 2013, at 3 p.m. at the Lovell Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.haskellfuneralhome.com.
