Relay raises more than $38K to fight cancer

08-15-2013_OX5N1305_RelayForLifeMore than 400 candle-lit luminarias, 10 teams of dedicated fundraisers and countless volunteers helped raise $38,758 to benefit the American Cancer Society at the sixth annual Relay for Life held on Friday, Aug. 9 in Lovell.

Organizers reported that it was smooth going at this year’s event, with everything going pretty much as planned. The event not only raises funds to help fight cancer but also honors cancer survivors and caregivers in the community and has become a major social event.

Roz’s Troop was once again the top fundraising team, bringing in $11,387. Team Minchow came in second after raising $7,504. The AMCOL International corporate team brought in $5,737.

Six-year-old Marie Hillman was named the top individual participant by organizers after she raised $1,900 with her lemonade stands and other efforts.

It was the place to be on Friday night with community members of all ages enjoying an unseasonably cool summer evening, while partaking in food, fun and entertainment at the Kevin P. Robertson Memorial Stadium in Lovell.

“We thought it was a fun, positive night,” said organizer Lori Scheffler. “We had a good turnout and people are already looking forward to next year.”

“We had an awesome committee,” added organizer Carol Fink. “There was no drama whatsoever and everybody had everybody else’s back.”

The group will continue to take donations through Aug. 31. For more information call Lori at 272-1601 or Carol at 548-6281.
