Yellowtail youth only pheasant hunt Saturday, Nov. 16

In an effort to provide a special opportunity for youth and to recruit new hunters, a youth only pheasant hunt will be conducted on Saturday, Nov. 16 on all lands included in the Yellowtail Wildlife Habitat Area north of the Shoshone River.

pheasant“Anyone 17 years of age or younger who has successfully completed a hunter education course can participate in the youth hunt,” said Cody Region Wildlife Supervisor Alan Osterland. “If a hunter education course has not been completed, youth can still hunt if they sign up for the Hunter Mentor Program.”

The mentor program allows any person who has not received a hunter education certification to apply for a special authorization to hunt while being accompanied by a mentor. A mentor must be 18 years of age or older, must have successfully passed a Wyoming hunter education class and possess a valid Wyoming hunting license.

“Youth hunts and the mentor program are both designed to recruit young hunters,” Osterland said. “The Yellowtail youth hunt also provides a great opportunity to become a hunter mentor.”

The special mentor-mentee authorization is valid for one calendar year. After that, any person participating in the program must successfully complete a hunter education class in order to hunt wildlife in Wyoming with a firearm.

All participants in the youth hunt must possess a Pheasant Special Management Stamp and participants over the age of 14 must possess a valid game bird or a small game/game bird license and Wyoming Conservation Stamp. An adult must accompany youth hunters under the age of 14 who have successfully completed a hunter education class. However, adults may not take any pheasants during the youth hunt day in the area set aside for the Yellowtail youth hunt.

All pheasant hunters regardless of age are required to wear one article of fluorescent orange clothing (hat, shirt, sweater, jacket, vest or coat) while hunting pheasants on the Yellowtail Habitat Area.
