Aug. 13, 1928 – Nov. 24, 2013
Gene Howard Pruett, born Aug. 13, 1928, in Bliss, Idaho to Howard and Maybell Pruett, died peacefully in his sleep at New Horizons Care Center on Nov. 24, 2013.
Gene attended school in Bliss until he graduated and then joined the Navy in 1946. His time in the service was spent in the Mediterranean and Key West Florida. In 1948, he went to work for Union Pacific Railroad in Omaha, Neb. There, he married Carolyn Copeland and four children were born to this union (Howard, Carol Ann, Wayne and Duane).
Shortly after marriage, they moved to Green River where Gene continued to work for the railroad. In 1975, he divorced and married Sharon Collins. One son was born to this union (Greg). In 1987, Gene retired from the railroad and they moved to Lovell. After a few years in Lovell they moved to Byron and Gene made Byron his forever home.
Sharon died in 1996. In 1997, Gene married Holly Bassett McMackin. Gene and Holly had many adventures together. Horses, 4-wheeling, many road trips and long conversations around their kitchen table filled the short time they had together. Holly died in 2005.
Gene could tell you about almost every trail within a 200-mile radius of Byron. He loved the outdoors and the friendships he had made over the years of living in Byron. In the last couple years, when his health was declining, he could still be seen cruising around town on his Razr or sitting at the Brandin’ Iron having breakfast and spending time with his grandson Landon.
Gene lived with his son Greg and family in Byron from 2007 until May this year. He spent some time in Utah with his son Wayne, but Byron was always his home.
In May, Gene became a resident at New Horizons Care Center in Lovell and remained there until his death. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, sister Wanda Prues, an infant son Duane Pruett, son Howard Pruett, stepdaughter Lori Collins and granddaughter Nancy Pruett. He is survived by son Wayne (Jean) Pruett of Castle Dale, Utah, daughter Carol Ann (Denny) O’Brien of Bellevue Neb., son Greg (April) Pruett of Byron, stepson Pete (Leanna) Collins of Lyman, stepson Bud (Sissy) McMackin of Casper, stepdaughter Cindy Campbell, brothers Duane (Azelle) Pruett and Steve Pruett, both of Idaho, nieces and nephews, 21 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services were held Nov. 30 at Haskell Funeral Home in Lovell with interment in the Byron Cemetery.
