A Lovell couple’s grandson has had a busy February photographing two of the world’s largest sporting events: the Super Bowl in East Rutherford, N.J., and the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
AAron Ontiveroz, grandson of Inez and Milt Ontiveroz, is currently in Sochi on assignment for The Denver Post. He is the only Post photographer on assignment at the Olympic Games, along with reporters John Henderson and Jason Blevins and columnist Mark Kiszla.
Ontiveroz, the son of Liz and Milton Ontiveroz of Laramie, will be in Sochi through Feb. 23 and will be photographing many of the Winter Olympics events over the next two weeks. He has been a photojournalist at The Post for three years.
Earlier this month, the younger Ontiveroz was among Denver Post photographers shooting the recent Super Bowl game between the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks. During the regular season, Ontiveroz was on The Post team photographing all Broncos home games at Sports Authority Field, and he also traveled for road games to Dallas and Kansas City.
The week before the Super Bowl, he was in Aspen, Colo., photographing the Winter X Games.
Ontiveroz graduated from Northwest College in 2006 and from the University of Wyoming in 2008. While at Northwest, he interned for The Powell Tribune, and also at The Laramie Boomerang while a student at UW. He was employed as a staff photographer for two years at the Wyoming Tribune Eagle in Cheyenne after graduating from UW.
He has won numerous Wyoming Press Association photography awards for all three newspapers he’s worked for, and his work at The Denver Post also has received state, regional, national and international recognition.
Ontiveroz was among The Denver Post photography staff that won a Pulitzer Prize – the highest journalism honor – last year for its breaking news coverage of the tragic Aurora theater shooting. He also has won a regional Emmy award for a news video he and a Post co-worker produced.
Ontiveroz, a general assignment photo journalist, also photographs Denver’s other professional sports teams: the Rockies, Nuggets and Avalanche.
