The Lovell Bulldogs golf team returns three varsity players from last year’s team that placed second at State after losing two seniors to graduation. One senior returns to the girls squad.
“We have a really strong team returning from last year,” new Bulldogs coach Levi Collins said.
This is Collins’ first year coaching the Lovell golf team as he takes over for Devon Parks, who moved to Evanston.
Seniors McKay Baxendale, CJ Murphey and Justin Mickelson will tee off for the Lovell boys team this year. Baxendale placed 13th at State last fall while Murphey placed 19th. They also both tied for fifth in the Five Rivers Conference and were 10th overall in the 2A ranks during the spring.
Gone are graduating seniors Chase Tippetts and Brandon Wolvington.
“CJ and McKay consistently placed last year for us so we hope they do the same this year,” Collins said.
Also returning for Lovell is junior Hunter Tippetts, who placed 27th at State, and sophomore Lane Hoover. The incoming freshman playing for Lovell this year is Gavin Wilske.
Once again, senior Cassi Colvin is the only girl competing for the Lady Bulldogs this year as she placed in the top 10 at State with a sixth-place finish.
“Cassi will be a strong performer for us this year,” Collins said. “Most of the kids were practicing on a regular basis over the summer, so I hope to see a lot of improvement from them this year.”
The Bulldogs will start the 2014 season at the Kendrick Golf Course in Sheridan today (Thursday) for the Sheridan Invitational. The tournament begins Thursday at noon and continues at 10 a.m. Friday.
Other tournaments this season include Worland on Aug. 28-29, Lander Sept. 4-5, Powell Sept. 11-12, the 3A West Regional in Jackson Sept. 19-20 and the 3A State Tournament Sept. 26-27 at the Olive-Glenn Golf Course in Cody.
