The Lovell High School golf squad took five golfers to the Lander Invitational last Thursday and Friday, placing sixth out of nine teams in the boys division.
The Bulldogs shot a team score of 379 on Thursday and a 384 on Friday for a two-day total of 763, 39 strokes behind Lander and 40 strokes ahead of Saratoga.
Senior McKay Baxendale was the top scorer for Lovell in the boys division, shooting 93 on Thursday and 83 on Friday for a two-day total of 176 to place in the top 10, just one stroke behind ninth-place Will Chapman of Jackson and two strokes ahead of 11th place Kyle Pfister of Riverton.
“McKay had a good tournament,” Bulldogs head coach Jason Beal said. “That was a pretty close group of golfers by the fact they were close with the scores.”
Placing second on the Lovell squad in Lander was senior CJ Murphey as he shot an 85 on Thursday and 96 on Friday to place 13th with a 181.
“He played a good round the first day, then struggled a little bit on the second day,” Beal said.
Junior Hunter Tippetts placed third with a 92 on Thursday and a 100 on Friday for a 192 to place 24th overall.
One Lovell sophomore also competed for the varsity squad. Lane Hoover shot a 109 on Thursday and a 105 on Friday for a score of 214.
Lovell’s lone female golfer, Cassie Colvin, shot a 118 on Thursday and a 127 on Friday for a score of 245 to place 13th in the girls division, just 18 strokes from placing in the top 10.
“We saw a lot of good things and things we need to work on to prepare for the Powell tournament this week,” Beal said.
Lovell will travel to Powell this week for the Powell Invitational, which will begin at noon Thursday and 8 a.m. Friday, Beal said.
The 3A West Regional Tournament is Sept. 19-20 in Jackson. State is Sept. 26-27 in Cody.
