Sept. 13, 1924 – Nov. 10, 2014
Loa Jean Peterson Smith, 90, of Lehi, Utah, died peacefully with her family gathered around her on Nov. 10, 2014.
Jean was the daughter of Reynold Peterson and Laura Rees. She was born in Manti, Utah, on Sept. 13, 1924, weighing in at 13 pounds. Shortly after her birth they moved to Cowley, where her brother Dee Ray was born. She grew up with cousins Ruth, Kathleen and Ann, who were more like sisters than cousins. In her words, she couldn’t have had a more perfect childhood. She graduated salutatorian from Cowley High School, and then graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Wyoming.
The little farm boy she grew up with, and was always found fighting on the playground, turned into a handsome naval officer. He then caught her eye and on March 25, 1946, Jean was sealed to her sweetheart, Fred Thomas Smith, in the Salt Lake City Temple. They have five children, who all agree Jean was a wonderful mother. She always knew how to make her children feel loved. This extended to all those around her.
Jean loved the Lord and served diligently her whole life in many church callings. She and Fred served two couples missions, the first to Albuquerque, N.M., and the second to Riverside, Calif. They were married for 67 wonderful years and are happy to be reunited once again.
Jean is survived by children Kent (Laurie), Fred (Marlene) and Sonya (Randy), 20 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her eternal companion, Fred, sons Dennis and Reynold and brother Dee Ray Peterson.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014, in the Lehi LDS Ward chapel. Interment was in the Alpine, Utah, city cemetery.
