The Lady Bulldogs volleyball team started their week on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at a leisurely pace with three easy-to-win sets against local rival Rocky Mountain. The girls overpowered the Lady Grizz in all three sets, winning 25-13, 25-12 and 25-5. Coach Stormy Jameson took advantage of the opportunity to try out a few new rotations.
“We were able to try a new rotation and we had some people flip-flop positions to find the most successful one as possible,” explained Jameson. “Things seemed to work and we have made some changes that I think will benefit us down the road.”
Game stats: Mykelle Nichols three kills, seven digs and two aces; Karlie Keller 11 kills, eight digs and two aces; Savanna Savage six kills; Kaitlyn Mickelson one kill and three aces; Mandi Jo Baxendale three kills; Trysa Flood one dig and two aces; Charri McArthur two kills, four digs, four aces, 20 assists and one block; Madison Harper seven digs; Kendra Price one dig and one ace and Shelby Wardell three digs and four aces.
The girls travelled to Powell Friday to take on the Lady Panthers in five hard-fought sets, winning two out of the five but falling to the tough-as-nails Panther team. Set scores were 25-17 (Powell), 25-22 (Lovell) 25-20 (Lovell) 25-22 (Powell) and 15-8 (Powell).
“Any time you lose a five-set match, it’s always a heart-breaker, said Jameson. “We knew going into Powell that we would have to play well to upset them on their home court. I think we had our chances to walk away with the win, but unfortunately, it didn’t go our way. I think we learned that we need to stay aggressive at the end of matches. That should allow us to have stronger finishes.”
Game stats: Nichols eight kills, 29 digs and one ace; Keller 14 kills and 22 digs; Savage nine kills, seven digs, one ace and two blocks; Baxendale six kills, one assist and two blocks; McArthur one kill, 19 digs, two aces, 38 assists and three blocks; Harper 24 digs; Price five kills, seven digs, two aces and three blocks and Wardell 15 digs and two aces.
The Lady Bulldogs took on Big Horn at home on Saturday, winning three out of five hard-fought sets against the No. 3 ranked 2A team. Scores were 25-17 (Lovell), 25-20 (Lovell), 25-20 (Big Horn), 25-23 (Big Horn) and 15-8 (Lovell).
“It was fun playing an old 2A familiar foe,” said Jameson. “We have played them in the 2A State semi-finals and championship games the past few years. With them being the number three ranked 2A team in the state, we knew they would come in strong. Although we won the first two sets, they forced us into another five-set thriller. I think we were able to learn from our loss from the night before, and we were able to jump out to 15 points first in the fifth.”
Games stats: Nichols 12 kills, 33 digs and three aces; Keller 12 kills, 14 digs and two aces; Savage 10 kills, two digs and one block; Baxendale seven kills, two digs and one block; McArthur two kills, 26 digs, three aces, 39 assists and six blocks; Harper 30 digs and three assists; Price two kills, four digs, two aces and two blocks and Wardell 15 digs and two aces.
Next up the team will travel to Shoshoni on Saturday. Game times are at 1 p.m. (JV) and 2 p.m. varsity. There will be no freshman game played.
“It will be nice this week, with it being homecoming week, to have some strong practices and a break from games until this Saturday in Shoshoni,” said Jameson.
