There will be some interesting matchups in store at the Big Horn Basin Classic basketball tournament today (Thursday) through Saturday with the boys tournament in Lovell and the girls tourney in Cowley.
A few games will also be played at Northwest College in Powell, and one at Powell High School.
In the boys tournament, the host Lovell Bulldogs (3-2) will face Thermopolis (3-3) in the first round Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the LHS Gym with the winner meeting second-ranked (3A) Buffalo (5-0) in the quarterfinals Friday at 3 p.m. The loser of the opener will play Friday at 4:30 p.m.
The Rocky Mountain boys (3-1) will meet Powell (0-4) in the opening round Thursday at 4:30 p.m. with the winner facing the Worland-Riverside winner Friday at 7:30 in the Cabre Gym at Northwest College. If Rocky falls to Powell, they will meet the loser of the Lovell-Thermopolis game Friday at 4:30 p.m. in Lovell.
Other first-round games in Lovell include Worland (1-2) vs. Riverside (2-4) Friday at noon, top-ranked Wind River (7-0) vs. Ten Sleep (3-2) Friday at 10:30 a.m., second-ranked Greybull (8-0) vs. Wright (2-6) at 1:30 p.m. at NWC, Lander (2-4) vs. Glenrock (3-1) also at 1:30 p.m. in Lovell, third-ranked Wyoming Indian (7-0) vs. second-ranked (1A) Burlington (5-2) at 6 p.m. on Thursday and Buffalo (5-0) earning a first-round bye.
The tournament will run through a championship game Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
The Rocky Mountain Lady Grizz (2-2) will open tournament play by facing the intradistrict rival Burlington Lady Huskies (2-4) Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Cowley with the winner facing the Buffalo-Wright winner Friday at 9 p.m., also in Cowley. If the Lady Grizzlies fall to Burlington, they will face the loser of the Powell-Greybull game Friday at 3 p.m.
The third-ranked Lovell Lady Bulldogs (4-1) will have a bye in the first round and will meet the winner of the Thermopolis-Wind River game Friday at 6 p.m. in Cowley. If the Lady Bulldogs win, they will play in the tournament semifinals Saturday at 1:30 p.m. If the Lady Bulldogs fall on Friday, they will play Saturday at 6 p.m.
Other first round games in Cowley include Lander (4-3) vs. Riverside (0-6) Friday at 10:30 a.m., fifth-ranked Wyoming Indian (2-5) vs. Glenrock (1-4) at 1:30 p.m., Powell (2-2) vs. Greybull (4-4) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Powell, Buffalo (4-1) vs. Wright (5-2) on Friday at 3 p.m. at NWC and Thermopolis (5-2) vs. Wind River (1-6) at noon. Top-ranked Worland (3-0) receives a first-round bye.
The Lovell Bulldogs junior varsity squad will open up the JV portion of the tournament, facing Greybull Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at Lovell Middle School and wrapping up the tournament Saturday at 4:30 p.m. against Buffalo.
The Rocky Mountain Grizz will open up the tournament against Burlington Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and will end the tournament Friday at 3 p.m. against Worland.
The Lady Bulldogs will face Ten Sleep Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Cowley and will face Buffalo Saturday at 3 p.m.
The Lady Grizz will meet Greybull Thursday at 4 p.m., Glenrock Friday at 6 p.m. and Ten Sleep Saturday at noon.
