The Lovell Mustangs wrapped up their home schedule over the past week with a trio of double-headers.
Next Wednesday’s scheduled home finale has been cancelled.
On Wednesday, July 1, the Mustangs split a pair with the Sheridan Jets at the Cowley Field, winning the first game 11-8, then dropping game two, 13-7. The next afternoon, the Mustangs fell twice to the tough Laurel Dodgers, dropping game one 8-7 and game two 7-5 in two very competitive contests.
Monday, the Mustangs hosted Green River and again split a twin bill, losing the first game 7-5 but clobbering the visitors 9-3 in the nightcap.

Sheridan series

Lovell jumped out to a 6-0 lead against the Sheridan Jets in game one last Wednesday, scoring four runs in the first and two in the second while starting pitcher Casey Clawson held the Jets bats at bay.
Sheridan finally got to Clawson for two in the top of the third, but Lovell got one back in the fourth to lead 7-2. The Jets plated four runs in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to one at 7-6, as Kade Baxendale pitched in relief of Clawson, but Lovell pushed three runs across the plate in the bottom of the frame to lead 10-6. David Rohrer cracked a two-run homerun for the Mustangs in the inning.
Lovell added an insurance run in the sixth as Scott Everheart blasted a home run. Sheridan plated two runs in the top of the seventh before Baxendale put out the fire.
Coach Kelly Spann said Clawson got the team off to a good start with four strong innings of pitching, allowing only two hits, and he said the Mustangs played solid defense, making only one error.
Offensively, the Mustangs put the pressure on the visitors with both hitting and aggressive base running.
Rohrer finished 2-2 at the plate with a homerun and two walks, Everheart 2-4 with the homer, scoring two runs. Erik Brimhall was 2-3 with a walk and two runs scored.
In game two, Sheridan jumped on starting pitcher Brimhall for four runs in the top of the first inning, but Lovell rallied for four runs in the second and two in the third to lead 6-4. Bryce Dickerson doubled home a pair in the second inning, and Everheart went deep again for a two-run homer, his second in two games.
“He’s just seeing the ball well right now,” Spann said. “He had a good day.”
Rohrer also stayed hot, hitting a two-run blast in the third inning.
Sheridan kept scoring while the Mustang bats fell silent. The Jets scored two in the fourth, two in the fifth and four in the sixth to lead 12-6 before Lovell got one back in the bottom of the sixth.
“Their bats came alive against Erik, and walks killed us more than anything,” Spann said. “We only made three errors.”
Sheridan scored one run in the top of the seventh to win 13-7.
Brimhall went the distance on the mound to take the loss, Spann said.

Laurel losses

The Mustangs played the very strong Laurel Dodgers tough in a Thursday doubleheader but fell twice.
In game one Laurel hit the ball well and plated three runs against Lovell starter Shane Dickerson in the top of the first inning. Two Lovell errors also helped the Laurel cause.
Lovell answered with two of their own in the bottom of the inning. Kyle Peterson singled home Brimhall, who had doubled to lead off the inning. Peterson moved up on an Everheart single and scored on an error.
After each team scored a run in the second, Lovell plated three in the third to lead 6-4. Rohrer blasted a two-run home run in the inning to put Lovell on top.
In the fourth, the Mustangs answered a Laurel run with one of their own to lead 7-5 but then went scoreless the rest of the way. Laurel rallied for three runs in the top of the fifth to win.
“We started out hot again, then did nothing in the last innings,” Spann noted.
Dickerson took the loss on the mound. Steven Pickett pitched two innings of scoreless relief.
In game two, Laurel led 2-1 after three innings, then scored twice in the fourth to lead 4-1. Lovell rallied for three in the bottom of the fourth to knot the score 4-4. Laurel kept chipping away, however, and scored single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh, while Lovell scored only one more time in the bottom of the sixth when Casey Pickett doubled home brother Steven.
“They played well,” Spann said. “They just didn’t take advantage of the opportunities they had.”
Casey Pickett went the distance on the mound in the loss.

Green River split

On Monday, Casey Pickett blanked Green River over the first three innings, while the Mustangs finally broke through for two in the third to lead 2-0. Green River plated three in the fourth to lead 3-2, but Lovell tied the score with one in the bottom of the frame. Cris Davila singled and scored on a double by Shane Dickerson.
After Green River scored a run in the top of the fifth, Lovell responded with two in the bottom of the inning to lead 5-4. Peterson singled home the two runs.
Green River won the game with two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Pickett went the distance on the mound to take the loss.
In game two, Green River scored three runs in the top of the first inning, but Lovell starter Clawson settled down after that and blanked the Green River squad for the next six innings.
Meanwhile, the Mustang bats were active as they scored two in the first, second and third and three in the fourth.
“We got some hits and we ran on them, too,” Spann said. “Their catcher had problems keeping the ball in front of him.”
Clawson pitched seven innings to pick up the win, allowing three runs on three hits and during one stretch retiring 11 consecutive batters. He fanned four.
Rohrer, Steven Pickett and Peterson each had two hits for the ‘Stangs.

Remaining schedule

The Mustangs were slated to play in the Billings Halos Tournament this weekend but were not entered into the tourney due to a miscommunication. The Riverton doubleheader next Wednesday had to be scrubbed when Riverton double-booked the date and chose to play a conference game.
Lovell will play in the Laramie Tournament July 17-19, then will travel to Casper July 23-25 for the North District Tournament.
Saturday’s clinic for Little League and Babe Ruth players has been postponed because the North Big Horn Babe Ruth team is scheduled to play Worland in a doubleheader at the Cowley Field.
