The 2009 Big Horn County Fair is fast approaching and many area youth have worked overtime to prepare for a week of fierce competition.
The Tri-County Youth Fun Day is not your typical rodeo; it’s designed to allow young people to release some of that pre-fair tension and cut loose with friends who turn into competitors starting July 23.
With events such as “dummy roping” and “goat tail tying” set to kick off at 8 a.m. on Monday at the Big Horn Rural Electric Rodeo Arena contestants are sure to have a ball.
The day, open to all youth ages 8 to 19 in Big Horn, Washakie and Hot Springs counties, is designed to give young people a breather before the fair when each performance will be under the watchful eye of judges.
“It’s meant to be just a fun day and to give kids one final go before fair,” said 4-H Educator Jenny Good.
Good is the new kid on the block for this year’s county fair and with more than 240 4-Hers in the county, she is looking forward to meeting “the rest of the kids” and seeing all the things they have made over the past year.
“The kids I have met so far have been great,” she said. “I am enjoying it, just trying to find my place.”
Good said she is ready to jump in and get her feet wet and has lined up roping steers for Fun Day through Pablo Good of Greybull. Julie Werbelow of Emblem is providing the goats.
“It should be lots of fun for the kids and lots of fun to watch, too,” she said.
Good said a plastic steer head on a hay bale is used in dummy roping and the event is popular with the 8- to 10-year-old crowd.
Team roping, team sorting, goat tying and a stake race, as well as poles and barrels are also scheduled.
The deadline to enter is 4 p.m. Friday and registrations can be made on-line at www.bighorncountyfair.com or at the fair office.
Riders times for the Fun Day events do not count toward fair or horse performance points. Spectators are not charged admission for Fun Day events.
