A strong group of seniors on their way out of the Lady Bulldogs volleyball program this year were recently recognized by coaches in the northwest conference and across the state. All four Lady bulldog seniors received all-conference honors and two players were selected for the all-state team.
Coach Mike Greenlee said he is very pleased with the 2A Northwest all-conference selections, and the two all-state selections. Mykel Anderson and Danielle Reasch were given all-state and all-conference honors and Katie Walker and Stephanie Green were given all-conference honors.
“These four seniors were the core of our team and accomplished a lot this year,” Greenlee said. “They were first in their conference, second in the regional tournament and fourth at State. As an official of 25 years that was present at the state tournament put it, ‘anytime you take hardware home from this tournament you should be proud, no matter what number is on the trophy.’ I agree whole-heartedly. These girls were great players and should truly be proud of themselves and their team.”
In addition to receiving all-state and all-conference honors, Anderson was also voted the 2A Northwest Player of the Year.
“Mykel is one of the hardest hitters in 2A,” Greenlee said. “Her power as a hitter was a factor in many of our wins this year. She was able to hit a variety of sets, allowing us to be less predictable in our offense. Mykel also excelled as a passer.
“It is quite an honor to be voted 2A Northwest player of the year, she should be proud of herself.”
Anderson had 329 kills, 158 digs, 41 aces and 65 blocks this season.
Greenlee said coaches have commented this season on Reasch’s ability to make a bad pass into a good set, calling it “a skill that we came to rely on.”
“Danielle was our co-captain and has set in every game for the last three years. She has very good work ethic, always playing hard and working to be better. Without her our hitters would not have had the success they experienced this year,” he said. “There will be some big shoes to fill next year in Dani’s absence. I hope someone can step up and do the job for us. I was very pleased to see her receive all-state honors from the 16 coaches present at the all state meeting. She is very deserving.”
Reasch had 810 set assists during the season, 54 aces and 31 kills.
After missing her sophomore year because of an injury, Stephanie Green made impressive strides in her game, Greenlee said.
“Steph was our captain and team leader. I could always count on her to play hard no matter who the competition was,” Greenlee said. “She never quit. She was our most consistent hitter and an excellent passer and server. We could rely on Steph to place the ball and score when it was crunch time.”
During the season, Green had 242 kills, 162 digs, 48 aces and 21 service errors in 81 games.
Greenlee said Walker’s work ethic in practice and in matches made her a much-improved player this season.
“Katie became a necessary component of our team this year,” he said. “She was our top server and was a real threat from the right side. She made some fantastic saves in the backcourt throughout the season, saves that allowed us to keep our offense moving. In the state tournament she covered the court better than she had all season.”
Walker tallied 77 kills, 115 digs, 72 aces and 20 service errors in 77 games.
