Several musical students from north Big Horn County are studying their music and preparing for All State Music, Jan. 18-20 in Casper.
From School District No. 1, Sam Seitz and Austin Brost sang their way to a trip to Casper for all state choir and Henry Sanchez was selected on percussion for the all-state orchestra. From School District No. 2, Rachel Carter and Evan Frost performed well enough to be a part of the all-state choir.

A spectacular display of lights and yard scenes carried the Gary and Connie Good family to first place in the 2008 Christmas Lighting Contest, sponsored by the Lovell Area Chamber of Commerce.

When residents of the north end of Big Horn County set out to form a fire district to cover the areas of Deaver and Frannie in March, their sights were set on December 2008 to begin fire protection. They prepared by building and acquiring buildings to house operations in each town, forming a board of directors and receiving and readying equipment like trucks, air packs and bunkers. Volunteers are training.
Now, with all their ducks seemingly in a row, the district waits to take over fire protection from the Powell district from which their boundaries were carved.

For local 115th Fires Brigade soldiers preparing to go overseas and their families, there are no doubt many thoughts about the upcoming deployment.
The Wyoming National Guard held two meetings in Lovell Wednesday, Dec. 17, to talk to soldiers, their families and members of the community about the upcoming deployment of the 115th Fires Brigade and to answer any questions.

In the future, garbage will be handled in a much different way than it is today. The days of burying mounds of plastic bags full of everything from scraps of food to old newspapers and liquid soap containers are drawing to a close, according to Big Horn County Solid Waste District Chairman Bob Kampbell.

Some avid Lovell Middle School readers battled their way to the top recently in the Big Horn Basin Battle of the Books competition held Dec. 5 in Manderson.

“Champions!” was the sound of the Lovell Mustangs on Tuesday night in Powell when the eighth grade boys won the conference tournament.
The tournament took place on Saturday in Powell but due to bad weather the championship game was postponed until Tuesday.

The Rocky Mountain Lady Grizzlies are off to a good start, scoring as many wins at the weekend’s season opening tournament in Greybull and Burlington as they did in regular conference games last year.
The Lady Grizz took three games at the Big Horn Shootout Tournament, winning over Wind River, Dubois and Pinedale.

The Rocky Mountain Grizzlies crowned two champions and had one runner-up as they had a strong showing at the Powell Invitational Wrestling Tournament over the weekend.

The Lovell Bulldogs hit the mat Friday and Saturday at the Powell Invitational. Many freshman Bulldogs won the first match of their high school career and a few placed in the varsity or JV brackets.

Asked if he was pleased with his team’s 2-1 record at the Bobcat Invitational in Thermopolis over the weekend, Bob Geiser had a simple answer: “Ecstatic.”
Lovell’s performance in Thermop certainly isn’t the final answer as to whether the Bulldogs are rebuilding or merely reloading after a last season’s 21-6 season, but it’s a strong start, Geiser said.

Construction began Monday on the Rocky Mountain School in Cowley at a groundbreaking ceremony. The school will house students in grades 6 to 12 in the north end of Big Horn County School District No. 1.

The Lovell Bulldogs will play at home while the Rocky Mountain Grizzlies travel across the mountain to start the 2009 football season, according to the schedule announced last week by the Wyoming High School Activities Association.

It was a frustrating afternoon for the Lovell Bulldogs Friday in Pinedale. They built a 23-0 first-half lead in the opening-round 3A playoff game, only to see it slip away as Pinedale came from behind to win, 28-23.

The Rocky Mountain Lady Grizzlies had a strong showing at the Class 2A State Volleyball Tournament Thursday through Saturday in Casper. The team played well, but narrowly missed placing in the top four 2A teams by just a few points.
