The small but mighty Rocky Mountain Grizzly wrestling team placed seven wrestlers in the top six at the 2A West Regional Wrestling Tournament in Greybull Friday and Saturday, including champions JR Vezain and Kaleb Hoyt.

Lovell High School students and staff are working to “pack the gym in pink” for the Wind River-Lovell basketball games on Friday, Feb. 5, to raise awareness of and funds for the fight against breast cancer.

After competing in several duals tournaments, the Rocky Mountain Grizzlies and coach Josh Collins competed in the 21-team Don Runner Memorial over the weekend, hosted by Wind River High School in Pavillion.

May knows a little bit about Lovell basketball tradition. During his senior year of 1985-86 at Lovell High School, he was a key member of the Lovell Bulldog squad that first ended the Wyoming Indian Chiefs’ 50-game winning streak, then defeated the Chiefs again for the state title two months later.

A strong group of seniors on their way out of the Lady Bulldogs volleyball program this year were recently recognized by coaches in the northwest conference and across the state. All four Lady bulldog seniors received all-conference honors and two players were selected for the all-state team.

The Lovell Lady Bulldogs finished the 2009 volleyball season with a fourth-place plaque, bringing a good ending to a great year of volleyball. The Lady Bulldogs’ efforts to place higher at State were thwarted by tough east competitor Sundance, who beat Lovell twice at the tourney.

With a narrow victory over Rocky Mountain Thursday, the Lovell Lady Bulldogs remain at the top of the Class 2A Northwest, but the team still isn’t consistently playing up to their potential, according to coach Mike Greenlee.

The first ever Better Body Fitness Highland Games were held Saturday at the Legion baseball field at Lovell High School. With participation from out-of-towners and locals, the event saw 17 contestants competing in seven different events derived from traditional Scottish Highland Games.

Wildlife sightings aren’t too uncommon at the Big Horn Canyon National Recreation Area near Lovell. People routinely witness wild horses, big horn sheep, black bear and other animals while spending time in the park. Though sighting wildlife is fun, it can be dangerous if wildlife viewers don’t exercise caution and common sense while viewing animals from a safe distance.

The small but mighty Lovell High School Dance Team defied the odds and placed second in Class 3A at the Wyoming State Spirit Competition last Wednesday, March 11, at the Casper Events Center.

The long holiday is over, and coaches and players in north Big Horn County are no doubt chomping at the bit to get back to action on the basketball court and wrestling mat. Indoor track will also soon be under way as the new year unfolds.

“Champions!” was the sound of the Lovell Mustangs on Tuesday night in Powell when the eighth grade boys won the conference tournament.
The tournament took place on Saturday in Powell but due to bad weather the championship game was postponed until Tuesday.

The Rocky Mountain Lady Grizzlies are off to a good start, scoring as many wins at the weekend’s season opening tournament in Greybull and Burlington as they did in regular conference games last year.
The Lady Grizz took three games at the Big Horn Shootout Tournament, winning over Wind River, Dubois and Pinedale.

The Lovell Bulldogs hit the mat Friday and Saturday at the Powell Invitational. Many freshman Bulldogs won the first match of their high school career and a few placed in the varsity or JV brackets.

Asked if he was pleased with his team’s 2-1 record at the Bobcat Invitational in Thermopolis over the weekend, Bob Geiser had a simple answer: “Ecstatic.”
Lovell’s performance in Thermop certainly isn’t the final answer as to whether the Bulldogs are rebuilding or merely reloading after a last season’s 21-6 season, but it’s a strong start, Geiser said.

The Lovell Bulldogs will play at home while the Rocky Mountain Grizzlies travel across the mountain to start the 2009 football season, according to the schedule announced last week by the Wyoming High School Activities Association.

It was a frustrating afternoon for the Lovell Bulldogs Friday in Pinedale. They built a 23-0 first-half lead in the opening-round 3A playoff game, only to see it slip away as Pinedale came from behind to win, 28-23.
