John Bundy named superintendent of Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area

John Bundy, a 36-year veteran of the National Park Service (NPS), has been named superintendent of Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area in Montana and Wyoming. Bundy will assume his new post on August 24, according to Intermountain Regional Director Sue Masica.

Bundy is currently serving as the superintendent at Shiloh National Military Park in Tenneesse. He has served in this position since June 2012.

“John’s many decades of experience with the National Park Service and his proven ability to manage complex issues makes me confident he’ll be an effective leader at Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area,” said Masica.

Bundy’s NPS career includes positions such as superintendent at Little River Canyon National Preserve and Russell Cave National Monument in Alabama, and Ocmulgee National Monument in Georgia. He also served as interim superintendent at Vicksburg National Military Park in Mississippi, and assistant regional director for Strategic Planning in the NPS’s Southeast Region. Bundy’s other assignments include deputy superintendent at Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site in Alabama, unit manager at Katmai National Park and Preserve, and Lake Clark National Park and Preserve in Alaska.

“I am excited about coming to Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area where both natural and cultural resources have prominent stories to tell,” said Bundy. “I look forward to making new friends and working alongside the talented park staff, stakeholders, and local constituents as we prepare the National Park Service for a second century of stewardship and public engagement.”

Bundy is a native of Niles, Michigan. He earned a bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology and ecology from Michigan State University in 1976. Prior to his NPS career, Bundy worked as a firefighter with the U.S. Forest Service.
