Lady Buffs put two in win column

by marlys good“All in all, a pretty good weekend,” commented Coach Jeff Hunt of his Lady Buffs 2-2 performance last weekend at the Big Piney invitational basketball tournament.Greybull lost to Snake River, 54-48, in the opener, then demolished Bear Lake (Idaho), 55-26 in Friday’s action. Saturday the Buffs opened action by tromping on Farson 48-18, and closed out with a one-point loss, 56-55, at the hands of the Lady Panthers from Cokeville.“Our best game was against Cokeville,” according to Hunt. “It was our second game in a row and that affected the outcome, but I was very proud of our effort and determination in this game.”Greybull played Farson at 8:10 a.m., and were back on court at 10:30 to play the Panthers, a “tough” team even if the Buffs had gotten some time to catch their collective breaths. The Buffs kept it close in the first quarter (down 8-11) but fell further behind in the second quarter and in the second half were down by as many as 11 points.“The girls responded very well and came back to tie the game late in the fourth quarter,” Hunt said. The comeback was fueled by tough defense and some key steals. As the game clock ticked down it turned into a fee throw contest with the Buffs hitting some big ones down the stretch.Unfortunately, as time ran out one of the Panthers stepped to the line and nailed the winning free throw for Cokeville.Brett Stephens and Karlina McIntosh were in double digits with 16 and 11 points respectively. The opening loss to Snake River, always a strong, talented 1A team, was attributed in part to a “flat” start by the Buffs. Explained Hunt, “It’s difficult to be on a bus for five or six hours, and then try to play against a good team. Snake River came out on fire and didn’t miss many shots in the first half. We came out strong in the second half and played great defense; we just couldn’t close the gap.”Three Buffs hit double-figures with Stephens leading the way with 13; Florina Villegas and McIntosh scored 10 points apiece. McIntosh led the defense with seven rebounds; Stephens was credited with nine steals.Looking back at the four games, Hunt said, “We saw a ton of improvement both as a team and as individual players. Our girls really stepped it up a notch this weekend. We played well as a team and had opportunities to win some close games against some very good teams from the other end of the state.”After a long drought, fans finally get to see the Lady Buffs next week when they open a three-game homestand. Greybull hosts Burlington Tuesday, Jan. 13, at 4 and 5:30 p.m.; Tongue River on Friday at 4 and 5:30 p.m. and close out with a game against the Big Horn Lady Rams Saturday at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Greybull, 48, Snake River 54Greybull 11 8 12 17 – 48Snake River 11 18 9 16 – 54GREYBULL: Savannah Kober 1-1 0-0 2; Chai Durfee 0-2 1-2 2; Jordan Flitner 1-2 0-0 2; Brett Stephens 5-18 1-2 13; Madi Edeler 1-2 0-1 2; Karlina McIntosh 3-18 4-9 10; Florina Villegas 5-8 0-0 10; Kai Sorensen 4-10 0-4 8.
