Lady Mustang cagers take three of four from Cody

The Lovell Middle School girls basketball teams kicked off the 2014 season Saturday, Jan. 11, with a triangular tournament that featured Lovell, Rocky and the host team, Greybull.The eighth grade started off the tourney by falling to rival Rocky Mountain, then fell to Greybull in their second game. No scores were available.The Lovell Middle School girls basketball squads traveled to Rocky Mountain Saturday, Jan. 18, for a quad tournament with Cloud Peak, Greybull and host team Rocky also participating. On Tuesday, the eighth grade hosted the Lady Cougars of Cody as the seventh grade traveled to Cody.The eighth-grade squad faced Cloud Peak in the first game of the tourney Saturday. The Lady Mustangs defeated Cloud Peak 30-20. Mikkel McIntosh led the team with 8 points and Mandi Baxendale added 5, Bailey Mitchell, Madison Bryson and Kincaid Johnston 4 apiece, Kendal Rasmussen and Sable Angell 2 each and Richellena Rule 1.The Lady Mustangs then squared off with Greybull in their last game of the tourney, falling to the Lady Buffs 28-21. McIntosh led the team again with 9 points and Johnston added 6, Baxendale 3, Bryson 2 and Mitchell 1.On Tuesday, the Mustangs hosted Cody and the A team fell to the Lady Cougars 34-9. Bryson led the team with 5 points and McIntosh added 4. The B team defeated Cody 7-2 in a contest that was limited to one eight-minute quarter. Johnston led the team with 3 points and Rule and Angell added 2 each.“My team keeps getting better and we are playing harder,” Lady Mustangs head coach RJ May said. “We had two sick starters today, which hurt us (in the game against Cody).”Kevin Walker is May’s assistant.

Seventh grade

The seventh grade started off the Jan. 11 tourney by falling to Rocky Mountain, then fell to Greybull in their second game. No scores were available.The seventh-graders faced Cloud Peak first at the Jan. 18 tournament in Cowley and defeated the Lady Cougars 33-16. Andrea Monterde led the team with 10 points and Chasnee Zeller added 9, Alexis DeLaCruz and Katrina Twitchell 5 apiece, Grace Edwards 3 and Tylee Bassett 1.The Lady Mustangs then faced Greybull and fell to Lady Buffs 29-12 as Karlee Burton and Paige Bischoff led the team with 4 points each and Alea Mayes and Monterde added 2 apiece.On Tuesday, the Mustangs traveled to Cody for a matchup with the Lady Cougars. The A team defeated Cody 26-17 as Bischoff led the Lady Mustangs with 8 points and Monterde added 6, Burton 4, Zeller, Mayes, Twitchell and Meyja McArthur 2 each.The B team also defeated Cody 26-7 as Ashlee Peterson led the Lady Mustangs with 5 points and Megan Cornia, Anamia Davila, Bassett and Twitchell added 4 apiece, Sage Mickelson and Zeller 2 each and DeLaCruz 1.On Saturday, the Lady Mustangs will travel to Burlington for a quad tournament with Thermopolis, Rocky and host team Burlington also participating. Tip-off is at 9:30 a.m.On Tuesday, the eighth grade travels to Powell as the seventh grade hosts the Lady Cubs for a 4:15 p.m. tip-off.The Lady Mustangs are coached by Jason Beal and Levi Collins.by Sam Smith
