Reassembly of Kane mail cart completed

The Lovell-Kane Area Museum has a new item being displayed in the depot warehouse at the museum on Oregon Avenue in Lovell – a reassembled mail cart used for decades at the Kane post office.
Museum board president Karen Spragg said the post office was established around 1909 and was operated out of residents’ homes. She said David Scott was the postmaster in 1915, followed by Maye Scott as postmistress at the Maye and Herschel Scott residence in the 1920s and ‘30s.

The Big Horn Basin banana belt received an awful shock this week with the mercury down to 30 below zero for the entire week. No wonder more people get the California fever every winter.
The regular annual jamboree of the members of the Goose Club met at the home of H.R. Tucker on Monday night and, notwithstanding the frightfully cold weather, a goodly number of members were present and had a good time.

Secretary of State to hear public comments on voter ID changes

CHEYENNE (WNE) — The Office of the Secretary of State will hold a public comment hearing on its Notice of Intent to amend Chapter 2 of its Election Procedures with the Wyoming Administrative Rules System.
The amendment is to require acceptable identification for proof of identity and proof of residency when registering to vote in Wyoming, as well as to provide uniformity and clarity concerning providing evidence of citizenship when registering to vote, according to a news release.

Big Horn County Fair board expands to seven members

At their December 19 meeting, the Big Horn County commissioners voted to expand the fair board to seven members.
The commissioner filled the three open seats at the December meeting, choosing Kelli Mercer, who had been serving on the fair board, and new members Tim Allen and Tucker McKim.
Ads seeking applicants for the additional two positions will be placed in local newspapers.
The pros and cons of having a larger board were discussed.

Unemployment rate rises to 3.0% in November 2023

The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose slightly from 2.9% in October to 3.0% in November, according to the Research & Planning section of the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services. Wyoming’s unemployment rate was much lower than its year-ago level of 3.9% and lower than the current U.S. unemployment rate of 3.7%.

Cody woman accused of trying to hire hitman to kill daughter’s boyfriend

POWELL – A 54-year-old Cody woman was arrested recently after she allegedly tried hiring an undercover officer to kill her daughter’s partner.
“I just want him gone … for the way he treats my daughter,” Wendy D. Coe reportedly said, at one point suggesting the man’s death could be made to appear like a drug overdose.

Police Report: Dispute between mother and son escalates

The Lovell Police Department received the following calls for the week of December 25 to December 31:
Dec. 25: 3:59 p.m.- At Lovell Apartments on Montana Avenue, a caller reported that her husband had a knife to his throat. The husband left the residence and was located by an officer. The man reported that he was not suicidal and appeared to be in good health.

Sheriff’s report Fireworks scare area dogs

The Big Horn County Sheriff’s Department received the following calls for the week of December 25 to December 31:
Dec. 26 09:22 a.m.- An injured deer was found at Highway 32 and Lane 13. The deer was evaluated by officers from the Sherriff’s Department and Wyoming Game and Fish and determined to have life-threatening injuries. The deer was euthanized to stop its suffering.

NWC Board of Trustees welcomes R.J. Kost

POWELL – Following their regularly scheduled monthly meeting on December 11, the Northwest College Board of Trustees welcomed its newest member, R.J. Kost of Powell. The trustees selected Kost to fill the unexpired term (until the 2024 General Election) of Powell trustee Dusty Spomer, who resigned on November 14.
“I am honored to be joining the NWC Board of Trustees,” said Kost, “and look forward to working with the board as we look toward the future of not only NWC but meeting the needs of students in Wyoming at our great college.”

Big Horn County School District #1 in good financial shape

Big Horn County School District #1 is in good financial shape, reported Business Manager Richard Parker at the December 14 school board meeting.
Parker said that the general fund has nearly $2.5 million while the general reserve fund has $2.8 million.
Expenditures are slightly higher than last year because of an unexpected payment. However, taking into account that part of that unexpected payment was for the previous academic year, expenditures are only about 3.5% higher this year.
