Rocky girls sweep Greybull and Shoshoni

Rocky Mountain girls’ basketball is on a mean streak, winning both of a two-game series this weekend.
The weekend started out with a home game against Greybull on Friday. Rocky was up 11-7 in the first quarter and 27-13 at the half.
Head coach Justin Moss said that the Greybull girls’ started to be worn out by Rocky’s press during the second quarter, and while the Rocky girls pressured Greybull from the start, they did not get into their rhythm until the second quarter.
It takes a lot of teamwork for that to happen, Moss said.

Grizz drop weekend conference games, gun for Wind River win

If the Rocky Mountain Grizzlies could just get over the hump …
Another oh-so-close and frustrating weekend for the Grizz has come and gone, this time against conference foes Greybull and Shoshoni.
Friday, the Grizzlies led conference leader Greybull 40-31 in the third quarter, only to fall behind and ultimately fall 61-52. Saturday in Shoshoni, the Grizz led by one in the final seconds but fell 51-50 on a late bucket.
The Grizzlies fell to 0-5 in the 2A Northwest.

Bulldogs bop Thermop, fall to Worland on buzzer-beater

As the regular season winds down, conference games are important, and the Lovell Bulldogs won one of two league games last weekend at home and on the road.
The Bulldogs defended Winterholler Gym Friday night as they clobbered the Thermopolis Bobcats 45-28, but they dropped a heartbreaker in Worland Saturday night, 42-41, on a three-point buzzer-beater.
With the split, the Bulldogs remain in second place in the 3A Northwest behind Powell with a 3-2 record.

Bulldog wrestlers prepare for Regionals

This past Friday, the Lovell Bulldogs traveled to Buffalo to participate in the Buffalo Duals.
“We had a quick Buffalo dual with Tongue River and Wright,” said head wrestling coach Ty Hecker. “We held some guys out at the dual to get them healthy for Regionals and State.”
The Bulldogs came out on top against both teams. Going against Wright first, the team set the score 54-30 to take the win. Following that, the Bulldogs beat the Tongue River Eagles 48-24.

The Rocky Mountain Grizzly middle school squads won four of five games last week as they near the end of the regular season.
Thursday in Basin, the eighth-grade squad had the night off since the Grizz had walloped Riverside 41-8 a week earlier, so the “B” team played Riverside’s “A” team in a game won by Riverside 24-17 but officially considered to be a forfeit for conference purposes for both the Rocky eighth-grade team and the seventh graders.

Local finners gear up for state swimming and diving meet

Laramie is the site for the 2023-24 Boys State Swimming and Diving meet starting tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 16. 3A warm-up sessions begin tonight (Thursday) at 6:30. Diving prelims and semis begin at 4:30 p.m. Friday after 4A finals. Swimming prelims are 30 minutes after the finish of diving. 3A finals are Saturday at 10 a.m.

Game and Fish plans 2024 season-setting meetings

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department has announced the dates of its annual season-setting public meetings in the Cody region.  
In Big Horn County, they are set for March 25 at the Lovell Fire Hall and March 26 at Greybull Town Hall.  Start time is 6 p.m. in both locations.
Meetings are also planned March 18 in Thermopolis, March 19 in Meeteetse, March 20 in Worland, March 21 in Powell and March 27 in Cody.
The meetings will address the following regulation proposals”
• Chapter 2, General Hunting Regulation

Mustang cagers near season end

The Lovell Middle School boys basketball squads are zeroing in on conference tournaments as the regular season winds down.
The seventh grade A team faced off against Cody last Tuesday in Cody, finishing with a 29-23 win. Reigo Romero led the team with 12 points, and Weston Hendershot scored 9, Mason Leithead 4 and Mac Morgan and Kannon Owens 2 apiece.

It’s important to recreate outside responsibly

It is important to recreate responsibly in Big Horn County, especially making sure one is prepared for the cold weather.
Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office sergeant Craig Shidler said the biggest issues the department faces are littering and people being unprepared for outdoor adventures.
When you go outdoors to recreate, always be prepared, including being equipped for weather changes and car issues.
