Lovell freshmen squads compete in local tournament
On Saturday, Dec. 16, the Lovell freshman boys and girls teams participated in the annual Lovell Freshmen Tournament at Johnny Winterholler Gymnasium.
The ninth grade Lady Bulldogs finished the day 2-0, beating both Powell and Worland.
In their opening round, the Lady Bulldogs fought off a comeback from Powell to win 37-32 behind 17 points from Celeste Lindsay. Brooklin Clark added 7, Kindle Collins 6, Hannity Felkins 4 and Kira Collins 3.
“The girls are playing well right now,” freshman coach Dan Wolvington said, “but we still have a long way to go with our defense.”
Lovell once again came out on top against the Lady Warriors from Worland, 36-15.
Kandace Asay led the way with 8 points in the contest. Lindsay and Kindle Collins added 7 each, Kaydree Owens 5, Clark 4, Kira Collins 3, Kenley Wilson 2.
Freshman boys
The Lovell freshman boys ended the weekend 1-2 against some stiff competition from Powell, Big Horn and Worland.
In game one, Powell took down the Bulldogs 32-26.
Cash Wassmer scored 16 for the Bulldogs while Nate Cornia put in 5, Sam Mayes 4 and Robert Capers 1.
Lovell again fell short against Big Horn, 39-29.
Wassmer, Mayes and Weston Hendershot scored 7 points each to lead the Bulldogs, and Cornia and Tazz McArthur both put in 4.
The Bulldogs bounced back to end the day with some much-needed offense to beat the Worland Warriors 51-44.
Mayes was impressive with 15 points. Hendershot also got into double digits with 10. Wassmer and McArthur both scored 7, Cornia 6, Declan Mayes 4 and Rocco Rael 2.
“I was proud of how the boys responded against Worland, and it was nice to pull out a win in the tournament,” freshman boys coach Michael Jameson said. “These boys work hard, and it was good to see them dig deep and earn the victory.”
Both Lovell squads will get back in action after the Christmas break, traveling to play in the Buffalo Freshman Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 6, then meeting
Greybull on Tuesday, Jan. 9, with the girls playing at home and
the boys in Greybull. Both games tip off at 6:15 p.m.
