The Cowley Progress

The matter of building a new church edifice in Cowley has been found to be impossible at this time for lack of funds to finance the undertaking. Under the circumstances, therefore, the next move will be to furnish the old building with new seats, for the old rickety chairs now in use, what few there are left, have become unsafe to sit on. New seats must no doubt be procured from donations from the members of the ward.

Not a few have declared themselves unwilling to donate for new seats as long as the present building is to be used for a gymnasium, dance hall and general amusement hall, for this necessitates either throwing the benches or chairs outside or into the upper room, and it is this moving the seats about (and this is scarcely ever done carefully, especially when moving them in a hurry to get ready for a dance) is what breaks them up in a short time.

Byron schools will take part in a state-wide Children’s Clothing Crusade to collect serviceable used clothing during the week of April 9, school superintendent J.A. Simmons announced today.

The big lineup of events this year has resulted in the cancellation of the Lovell Farm-Home Trade Fair. Included in the lineup of events this year are the bicentennial activities, Mustang Days and the September 25 dedication of the NPS visitor center. 

State Senator Cal Taggart, chairman of the chamber dedication committee, reported visitors to the dedication could number in the hundreds. The possibility exists that the president, vice president or secretary of the interior will attend and swell the crowd into the thousands, and Taggart reminded the chamber members of the work and funds it would take to put on a banquet for such a large crowd.

The Lovell High School Drama Dept. will be reviving the hit musical “The Sound of Music” with a three-night run beginning March 31. Drama Club Director John Lee Mangus said, “It is interesting to note that two of the cast members, Lauren White, cast as the Mother Abbess, and Ranee Savage, the oldest daughter of the family, were in the 1992 production of ‘Sound of Music’ as the youngest children of the family von Trapp.” 

Ashley Winterholler has been cast as Maria, the governess of the seven von Trapp children, while Jordan Hitz will play their father, Captain Georg von Trapp.

The Lovell Chronicle

A strong turnout at the most recent Lovell walking path meeting led to new leadership for the effort, organizer Christy Fleming said this week, with Haley Sorenson stepping up to lead the group. Fleming has led the formation of a walking/biking path committee in its initial stages, hosting and facilitating meetings in October, November and December. But she has made it clear that it was important for interested citizens to step forward from the community to lead the effort in the future, saying that, with her current position with the National Park Service, she cannot engage in fundraising and take the leadership role in the future.
