Rocky Mountain makes final regular season stop at Greybull Memorial
Rocky Mountain wrapped up the regular wrestling season at the Greybull Memorial Tournament Saturday with a reduced roster and a clear focus on what comes next.
“With many of the team missing to attend a funeral, seven Grizz wrestlers and one Lady Grizz wrestler attended,” head coach Eddie Whiting said. “We came away with huge victories and showed lots of growth.”
Whiting said the Greybull Memorial carried extra importance as the final regular-season tournament before postseason seeding.
“This was our last regular season tournament, so it’s a huge and crucial one to help get kids seeded for Regionals,” he said, noting the meet also gave the team a chance to evaluate matchups “to see what opponents look like or where we need improvements on and to where we can really critique those little things.”
Rocky Mountain also competed in a dual with Moorcroft on Friday, falling 54–15. Whiting pointed to health as a major factor.
“Sickness got the best of us when it came to dual time,” he said. Despite the result, he said the dual offered valuable perspective.
“In all, it was a great way to look at our competition in a different way,” he said. “In my mind, if our whole team was there and healthy that score would look different.”
At the Greybull Memorial Tournament, Rocky Mountain had four placers. Triffen Jolley and Masen Twomey finished first, while Sky Olsen and Benson Jolley placed third. The Rocky Mountain boys team finished seventh out of 14 teams, while the girls placed 10th out of 13 teams.
Looking ahead, Whiting said the focus now turns to preparation for the postseason.
“Now we go into a bye week and into the post season with Regionals and State right around the corner,” he said. “In my mind, it’s working on sharpening the tools we’ve got and getting better by sticking to the grind and keep climbing the mountain.”
Whiting also highlighted the Jolley brothers. “My standout preferences this week are the Jolley brothers,” he said. “You’ve got Benson, who just gets tremendously better each week and shows so much potential and growth.” He also pointed to Triffen’s response after Friday’s loss, noting, “Then there’s Triffen. … He lost on Friday night and then Saturday was having a fire burn in him and getting a huge win.”
The Grizz will take a week off to heal and prepare for their regional tournament on Friday, Feb. 20. Rocky Mountain High School will host this year’s regional meet for the boys while the girls compete in Powell Feb. 20-21.
