Sheriff report: Search and Rescue comes to aid of stranded boaters

The Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office received the following calls for the week of August 17-23:

August 17: 6:01 p.m. – A deputy provided information to a citizen regarding a three-day notice to quit.

August 18: 4:37 a.m. – A deputy investigated a vehicle vs. cow collision on U.S. 14A northeast of Byron. The driver, Mandilyn Joy of Lovell, was having trouble getting her door open, and the air bags deployed.

11:51 a.m. – A deputy removed a dead deer from the highway on U.S. 310 just west of Cowley.

2:23 p.m. – After a call regarding an apparent illegally parked vehicle on East Shoshone in Byron, a deputy discovered that the owner did have permission to park at the location.

3:45 p.m. – A woman accused a person of stealing her purse in Byron but then found that she had left it at the post office.

9:53 p.m. – A caller was worried that someone may have been in their residence because they found the front door unlocked. A deputy responded and cleared the residence.

August 19: A deputy assisted a motorist whose vehicle had broken down two miles west of Lovell with a broken radiator hose. The driver was waiting for someone to come and pick them up.

August 20: 9 a.m. – A deputy checked on a broken-down pickup with a broken axle northwest of the Oasis Junction and made note of the truck.

3:39 p.m. – A deputy checked on a vehicle stopped alongside Wyoming 32. The vehicle had overheated, but the occupants “had everything needed to fix it.”

August 22: 1:47 p.m. – A deputy responded to some boaters nine miles north of U.S. 14A on Wyoming Highway 37 near Horseshoe Bend whose boat had come unhitched from a camper behind a pickup. The people were able to secure the boat, and the deputy followed them into town to make sure it didn’t happen again.

4:09 p.m. – Big Horn County Search and Rescue responded to a call regarding a man with two sons whose bass boat engine had quit 20 miles north of Barry’s Landing. Search and Rescue responded with a jet boat and towed the boat to the boat ramp at Barry’s. A SAR Facebook post reported that the man did get the boat “partially running” and had made it about six miles south toward Barry’s when the jet boat arrived for the tow.

10:27 p.m. – A deputy responded to a call regarding a possible assault in Deaver, but an investigation produced no criminal finding.

August 23: 7:04 p.m. – The Sheriff’s Office, Lovell Police Dept. and a National Park Service ranger responded to Horseshoe Bend for a dispute between two parties. A motor home involved in the incident was disabled with a broken axle. There were no reported injuries.

7:13 p.m. – A REDDI report regarding a possible drunk driver heading toward Lovell from the west was referred to the Wyoming Highway Patrol because no deputy was in position.

Note: The above calls were received by the Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office. Persons arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and charges made upon initial arrest may be amended or dismissed as determined by the County Attorney.

911 outage

Sheriff Jason Beal confirmed that local law enforcement agencies dealt with a 911 outage Friday and Saturday during which all 911 calls were diverted to a dispatch center in Worland. He said the outage affected both Big Horn County and Park County.

The outage affected regular phone lines as well, Beal said. He said the outage caused slight delays during calls, but emergency calls were still answered.
