Lovell boys win Bobcat Invitational as relay team breaks school record

The Lovell High School track and field team appears to be in peak form as the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs head into the postseason at the 3A West Regional track and field meet in Mountain View this weekend.
Lovell attended the Bobcat Invitational in Thermopolis Friday to wrap up the regular season and fine-tune events for Regionals and State.
The Lovell boys won the team title, finishing first out of 19 teams with 109 points, edging Worland with 101.5 points, host Thermopolis with 101 points and Powell with 91.

Grizzly thinclads ready for postseason

Everything is in line for the regional and state track meets, Rocky Mountain track and field coach Tobee Christiansen said this week following Rocky’s competition in the final meet of the regular season Friday, the Bobcat Invitational in Thermopolis.
“We’ve got things pretty much set for who will be where,” Christiansen said. “The hay’s in the barn, so to speak. We just need to compete now.”
In running events for the Rocky boys, Coach C noted the effort of sophomore Will Watts, who placed 12th out of 59 runners in a time of 24.93 seconds.

Rocky eighth-grade boys capture conference meet

The Rocky Mountain Middle School track and field program completed a successful 2024 season last week by hosting the Big Horn Conference meet in Cowley.
The home cooking paid off for the Rocky eighth-grade boys, as they topped the field of six schools to win the team title with 169 points, well ahead of second-place Burlington with 120.6 points.
In other divisions, the Rocky seventh-grade boys placed second to Greybull with 113 points to Greybull’s 200. The eighth-grade girls placed third, the seventh-grade Lady Grizz fourth.

Mustangs excel at Yellowstone Conference meet

There was some exciting school record-breaking by Lovell Mustang athletes at the Yellowstone Conference Track and Field meet in Thermopolis Saturday including sixth grader Bradley Mickelson in the high jump with a jump of 5-0.

Mustangs sweep Riverton in home opener

The Lovell Mustangs American Legion baseball team went 2-0 on Saturday against the Riverton Raiders in the season’s home opener in Cowley.
The Mustangs defeated the Raiders 8-3 and 8-2 in the doubleheader.
In game one, Lovell jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Lafe Files tripled to knock in two runs.
Offensively, the Mustangs fared much better against Riverton than their previous outing in Billings.
Lovell had 11 hits at the plate and only surrendered five outs via strikeout.

Strong outing for LHS golf teams in Cody

The Lovell High School girls and boys golf teams had another successful tournament on Friday, May 3, in Cody.
Despite of the colder temperatures and strong wind, coach Dane Robertson was pleased to see the lower individual scores.
Erika Cook continued her dominance for the girls by shooting a 67 on the course to win by a margin of 12 strokes.
Madison Wolvington finished at 97 to place 14th at the event with Kenley Wilson at 22nd, shooting 111.

Majors and minors seasons underway

The Big Horn County Little League majors and minors have started their seasons with games last week.
In minor league action, the Braves went 2-0 in Greybull last Thursday, beating their opponent 13-0 and 16-3.
The Rays also beat a team from Greybull 6-3 and 13-0 on Thursday in Lovell.
The Twins had their first game on Tuesday against the Rays and almost pulled off a last inning comeback before falling 6-5.
The late game on Tuesday between the Twins and Braves was cancelled due to weather.

Cowley Spring Rodeo held Saturday

Cowgirls and cowboys from throughout the Big Horn Basin and beyond gathered at the Cowley Rodeo Grounds on Saturday for the Cowley Riding Club’s annual spring rodeo. This is the 75th anniversary year for the popular early season competition.
Jay Dillon won the bareback competition with a score of 68. Domanic Hartley won bull riding with a score of 79.
In calf roping, Kolton Miller won with a score of 13.21, Joe Panetta took second place with 19.28 and Ty Wilcox placed third at 19.62.

Two more school records go down for LHS track

The majority of the Lovell High School track and field squad made the short trip to Cowley for the Rocky Mountain Invitational Saturday, while three members also qualified for the Wyoming Track and Field Classic best-of-the-best meet in Casper Friday.

A quick count of the results of the Rocky Mountain Invitational track and field meet Saturday shows some 27 personal records set by RMHS athletes, showing that the Grizzlies are peaking at the right time with the regional and state track meets approaching.
“Any time you have that many kids PR, you’re definitely heading in the right direction,” Rocky head coach Tobee Christiansen said.
