Asay, Wambeke win Pioneer Day Fun Run races

A pair of local high school track and field competitors captured the two individual titles at the Pioneer Day Fun Run in Cowley Saturday morning.
Lovell High School incoming senior Stetson Asay easily won the 5K race in a time of 21:35, while Rocky Mountain High School sophomore-to-be Dalan Wambeke defended his title in the mile, winning the race in a time of 6:37, 30 seconds faster than his time a year ago.
Cleve Wilson placed second in the 5K in a time of 23:21, followed in third place by Drew Jensen in 24:28 and Cason James close behind in fourth at 24:30. Peter Kelchner ran 25:16.
The top female runner in the 5K was Emily Asay in a time of 25:40, followed by Alyssa Hinckley and Lauren Hinckley (no times recorded).
After Wambeke’s 6:37 in the mile, Shaw Dixon placed second in a time of 7:00, followed by Eddie Whiting in third at 7:13 and Shad Dixon in 8:02. Tayson Dixon ran 8:27, Duncan Clark 11:17 (third in the youth division) and Brecan Clark in 11:25. The top female runner in the mile was Presli Moss in 8:17, capturing the youth title, followed by Keylee Christiansen in 8:18, Tianna Christiansen in 8:26 and Brecklyn Whiting (youth division) in 9:00.
A special award was given to 93-year-old Dennis Godfrey of Cowley and Desert Hot Springs, California, as perhaps the oldest competitor in the history of the run. Godfrey completed the mile in a time of 26:35, keeping up a steady walking pace.
