August Programs at Bighorn Canyon listed
The following August programs can be enjoyed on the South District of the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area near Lovell:
Ranch tours
August 10 – Join Ranger Emilie Asay and Homesteader Museum Collection Manager Avery Frank for the last of three Spark ranch tours. Bighorn Canyon is partnering with the Homesteader Museum in Powell. Homesteader received a grant from the Smithsonian to present Spark based programming.
The last Spark program will take place at the Ewing/Snell Ranch. Ranger Asay will discuss how living off the grid requires a spark of ingenuity to power the lives of those that lived at the ranch in the past and into today. Participants can meet Asay at the Lovell Visitor Center at 9 a.m. to car caravan to the ranch.
August 21 – Join VIP Mike Bridgeman and VIP Steve Kinney for Tours of the Lockhart Ranch. Tours will start at 10:30 a.m. and go until 1 or 2 p.m., depending on the weather.
Ranger program
August 22 – Sip and Pour Paint with VIP Natalie Hall on the Bighorn Canyon Visitor Center lawn. Take inspiration from the canyon or flower beds to create an abstract and colorful representation of our area. Lemonade will be provided. Painting starts at 6 p.m.
Geology
August 10 – Join VIP Greg Jones on the porch of the Horseshoe Bend Marina at 9:30 a.m. to discuss the “Geology of Sykes Mountain.”
August 14 – VIP Jones will be at the Devil Canyon Overlook from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to greet visitors and answer questions.
August 16 - Join VIP Jones at Barry’s Landing parking lot at 10 a.m. to learn about “Tropical Wyoming” on a fossil wall walk.
August 24 – Meet VIP Jones at Devil Canyon overlook at 10 a.m. From there, you will drive to the parking area just north of Sullivan’s Knob. At this location Jones will present “Bending and Breaking: Folds and Faults in Bighorn Canyon.”
August 27 - VIP Jones will be at the Devil Canyon Overlook from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to greet visitors and answer questions.
September 7 – VIP Jones will be giving his “Trail Geology Hike - Walk Along an Ancient Shoreline” guided walk at 9 a.m. on the State Line Trail.
Partnering programs
August 10 – Join the Big Horn Basin Outdoor Recreation Collaborative for a community float on the Basin to Greybull section of the Big Horn River Blueway Trail. The float is hosted in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, Wyoming Game & Fish Department, Wyoming Office of Outdoor Recreation and Wyoming State Parks. The community float will take place on Saturday, Aug. 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. starting at the Basin boat ramp located in Basin and ending at Greybull City Park. The float covers 11 miles of the proposed Big Horn River Blueway Trail and is open and free to the public.
Participants of all experience levels are welcome. Experienced volunteers and agency staff members will assist participants from the boat launch to the take-out location. Upon arrival, volunteers and agency staff will provide a safety briefing and assist with watercraft preparation for an 11 a.m. launch. Participants will need to bring their own personal flotation device and non-motorized watercraft such as a kayak, paddle board, canoe and/or inflatable raft. Participants are also encouraged to wear the appropriate attire and to bring sunscreen, water and snacks for the float.
All watercraft using Wyoming waters are required to display an aquatic invasive species decal.
