Beeton and Sockey finish high school swim season at State
The Powell girls swimming and diving team ended their 2024 season with a seventh-place finish at the 3A state meet in Cheyenne last weekend (Nov. 7-8). Lovell students Leah Sockey and Charlotte Beeton competed at State, both swimming the final leg in the 200 freestyle relay, Sockey in prelims and Beeton in the finals, and finished 11th with 4 team points. Sockey also competed in the 50 free event for athletes with special challenges.
Coach Bob Smartt commented that “both Charlotte and Leah have made major contributions to our swim team this year. Charlotte placed ninth in the 100-yard butterfly and 12th in the 100-yard backstroke at our conference meet in Newcastle. She has made remarkable progress during the season. Her butterfly and backstroke times at the conference meet were faster than her freestyle time at the beginning of the season, which is a very unusual accomplishment.
“She was very close to making the state qualifying time in those two events at the end of the season. If she had had one or two more weeks of training, she likely would have made state individually, given the big progress she was making each week at practice.”
He continued regarding Sockey, “Leah Sockey made major improvement this year, especially in the distance freestyle events, which requires a lot of character. Leah is always willing to swim the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, events which scares off other athletes. She also has improved this year markedly in her backstroke races.”
