Big Horn County 4-H wins NILE livestock judging contest

Hard work, discipline and determination are what it takes to be called to the floor, and Big Horn County 4-Hers reaped the benefits of all three at the Northern International Livestock Exposition (NILE) Livestock Judging Contest. One of the largest contests in which 4-H members compete, the NILE brings together more than 800 youth from 13 states.

Leading the way, Addisyn Perkins of Lovell brought home the overall win in the senior 4-H division, and her impressive score would have also earned her the top FFA individual spot.

“Addisyn has shown remarkable perseverance, placing as high individual at both fall contests — Casper College on September 13 and the NILE on October 13 — while battling illness at both events,” said Big Horn County 4-H Educator Gretchen Gasvoda. “Her determination and drive shine through both in the show ring and on the judging floor.”

The Big Horn County Junior 4-H Team — Sammy Boardman of Frannie, Brinley Dewey of Otto, Jaylee Davila of Lovell and Renaka Lauhoff of Lovell — captured first place team honors. 

“These four young ladies exemplify dedication and grit, putting in long hours in the show ring and then turning around to judge livestock on little rest,” Gasvoda said.

Individually, Boardman placed third overall, Lauhoff 11th, Dewey 12th and Davila 33rd.

Others participating at the NILE contest included Emmalyn Dalin of Greybull, Trevin Green of Cowley and Jesse Reber of Greybull. Reber also competed at the Casper College Contest. Moving age divisions is always a challenging task, but perseverance will pay off,” Gasvoda said.

At the Casper College contest, Dewey earned first overall junior division, Davila placed third and Boardman brought home second overall intermediate division.

Gasvoda added, “Success in livestock judging takes more than just traveling to contests. These youth dedicate countless hours to studying classes online, listening to oral reasons and attending practices to sharpen their skills.
