An epic battle among sharp readers was held at Lovell Middle School on December 11 in the annual Challenge of the Books contest.

The contest tests the ability of a middle school student to read and retain knowledge from books they were assigned to read.

Four teams battled for Challenge supremacy, collaborating to answer a series of questions from library paraprofessionals Gwen Walker and Danielle Henley.

Students read up to 12 books selected from the competition, then responded to a series of questions posed by Henley with their answer in the form of the title and author of the book. Walker kept score.

The team had 30 seconds to huddle and come up with a response after each question, with the team captain stating the answer after the huddle. If the team answers incorrectly, the opposing team had 15 seconds to come up with the correct response.

The four LMS teams were:

The Bougie Jacuzzis – Isaac Sanders, Chloe Asay, Nellie Guccion, Kylie Nicholls, Emily Sanders and team captain Weston Hendershot.

The Book Stars – Team captain Ariana Nuttall, Linnea Olsen, Alynna Monterde, Bella Patina, Arianna Snyder and Randi Ayotte.

Book Dawgs – Team captain Renaka Lauhoff, Taylor Henderson, Kobi Jameson, Macee Winterholler, Paige Asay and Oakley Bischoff.

Six Chicks – Team Captain Kelsey Mangus, Sofia Khan, Kendra Allen, Toree Herman, Oakley Anderson and Lillian Henley.

“This was Danielle Henley’s first year as a coach, and she did a great job,” Walker said. “All of the teams were well prepared and ready to challenge.”

In round one, Bougie Jacuzzis topped the Book Stars 54-46, and in round two the Six Chicks beat the Book Dawgs 52-41.

Bougie Jacuzzis won the title over Six Chicks 49-38 and will advance to the area challenge in Basin on Wednesday, Feb. 19.
