Eugene M. Grant of Cody died Oct. 20, 2015, in a Billings hospital after a lengthy illness.Born in Leadville, Colo., to Eugene W. and Mary Grant, he attended local schools and later received his Bachelor of Science degree in math and chemistry from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. He was selected as a candidate and completed a Master of Science degree in nuclear physics and chemistry, funded by the National Science Foundation, facilitated through the University of Wyoming in Laramie.With a desire to share knowledge, Eugene became a high school teacher of chemistry, physics and advanced mathematics in Lovell and in Butte, Mont. He guided students both in and out of the classroom by illustrating the “real world” application of math, chemistry and physics.After his early career in education, he later worked for Marathon Oil facilitating the permitting of oil drilling applications as a liaison with federal and regulatory agencies. He retired in 1999.Eugene was an avid hunter and fly fisherman. His competitive hobby was instinctive archery shooting, without the use of sights using a recurve bow. He participated in and won many archery competitions in the Western U.S., including the Colorado State Championship. His leisure hobby was skiing. As a member of the National Ski Patrol, he assisted in the formation and training of other Ski Patrol groups in Colorado.He strongly believed in helping others and led by example. Eugene was a supporter and participant in the Big Brother/Big Sister Program in Cody, as well as hunting programs for the handicapped hunter.Eugene was first and foremost a devoted family man. He believed family bonds were forged by spending quality time together and sharing in each other’s lives. Weekends were spent hunting, camping, fishing or hiking in the surrounding mountains. He was greatly involved with both of his sons and enjoyed teaching them hunting and fly fishing techniques. He not only taught his sons and “little brothers”  these skills, but also imparted a respect for nature and wildlife.Eugene is survived by his wife Judy, sons Dr. Michael Grant and Carson Grant (Rosa) and sister Greta Grant, as well as several cousins.Vigil services will be held on Friday, Oct. 30, 2015, at 7 p.m. at the Church of St. Anthony in Cody. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, Oct. 31, at 10 a.m. with burial to follow at Riverside-Graham Cemetery in Cody. An online memorial is available at www.ballardfh.com.
