Fifth graders win LES food drive
The annual Lovell Elementary School Christmas food drive was a big success this year, organizer Gwen Walker reported.
LES students collected 3,446 cans this year, “surpassing our goal of 2,500,” she said.
Fifth-grade students were behind the fourth grade by 126 cans last week, Walker said, but on Monday – the day of the collection and pickup by Lovell firemen – the fifth grade jumped ahead to wind up with a total of 1,096 cans, 81 more than the fourth graders, who brought in 1,015.
The fifth graders won a pizza party in the library for their efforts.
The third grade gathered 364 cans, second grade 429, first grade 265 and kindergarten 277.
The school gathered food for four weeks, then boxed the items Monday morning for the Lovell Volunteer Fire Dept. to pick up for the department’s annual Christmas basket program.
Firemen picked up the LES boxes and will assemble the Christmas baskets on Monday, Dec. 16.
Assistant Chief Bob Mangus said the department welcomes donations until Monday morning, noting that the drive so far is well short of where it normally is, other than the Lovell Elementary students.
