Free youth horsemanship clinic to promote safety September 21 in Cody
The Shoshone Back Country Horsemen are sponsoring a free clinic for area youth, 18 years and younger, at the Boot and Bottle Club in Cody on September 21.
The morning will kick off with a Wyoming Game and Fish demonstration of bear awareness and safety in the back country. Attendees will have the opportunity to spray inert bear spray at Robobear, a remote-control grizzly. Students will be taught how to react if they are charged by a live bear.
Participants will then move through a series of stations. The first station is a horsemanship class. Its goal is to promote confidence and control. The second station is an obstacle desensitation course, which enables horses and riders to tackle trail challenges. Next, students will attend a packing demonstration. Finally, a Leave No Trace presentation will teach preparedness, safety and stewardship in the back country.
Cathy Ringler, Education Director of the Shoshone Back Country Horsemen, stated, “Our youth clinics are a lot of fun. Kids work with their horses to master obstacles and build confidence which leads to safety on the trail. They also learn valuable skills, meet new friends and even enjoy a free lunch.”
The clinic is made possible by the Shoshone Back Country Horsemen and the generosity of David Rael and Sunlight Sports. Participants should bring their own horses or mules that are proven safe in a like environment.
