Greybull to celebrate Days of ’49

Annual celebration runs from Thursday through Sunday

“Stars, Stripes and Rodeo Nights” is the theme of this year’s Days of ‘49 celebration, which runs today through Sunday, June 15.

Here’s a rundown of what’s planned:

Thursday, June 8

Lisa’s has tweaked its plans for the opening night of the celebration.  The tug-of-war returns and several new events have been added including a cornhole tournament and beer pong. A deejay will be there to spin the hits.  Contact Lisa’s for more information.

Friday, June 9

The Herb Asp Community Center will be the site for a two-day gun show sponsored by the Greybull Recreation District.  Show times are 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. The show features a variety of guns, knives, hunting and sporting gear, self-defense, ammunition, and more.  There is no admission fee. For more information call 765-9575 or email greyrec@gmail.com.

The spotlight shifts to the rodeo grounds in the evening for the second leg of the Big Horn Rodeo Circuit season. The Days of ‘49 rodeo starts at 7 p.m. with the crowning of the Queen Jamie Taylor of Burlington and Princess Josie Collingwood of Greybull. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for kids under 13 and senior citizens.

Saturday, June 10

The Big Horn County Arts Guild’s is planning an Artist Quick Draw on Greybull Avenue starting at 9 a.m., followed by an art auction at the Silver Spur at 1 p.m.

The Main Parade starts at 10:30 a.m. The route will be the same as in past years, starting on Eighth Avenue North and then proceeding south on Sixth Street to the light, east on Greybull Avenue to Third Street and down to First Avenue South. 

Organizer Mike Howe is expecting another great turnout of vehicles for the Classic Car Show, which runs from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cars will be lined up on Greybull Avenue. For more details, contact Howe, 272-1415.  At the end of the car show, there will be a burnout session on the west end of Greybull Avenue.

The annual Kids Rodeo is planned for 2 p.m. at the rodeo grounds and includes barrels, poles, steer riding and breakaway with prizes for the winners.  Non-horse participants can enjoy stick horse barrels, calf scramble, boot race and dummy roping.  No merchant roping is planned this year.

South Big Horn Little League is planning a home run derby fundraiser at 2 p.m. at the Art Schutte Sports Complex.  Entry fees are $20 for seniors, $10 for majors and minors and $5 for coach-pitch and T-ball players. Every dollar raised will be used to support the league. 

The final event of the day is a live musical performance by Blackwater starting at 8 p.m. in the lot across from Town Hall. Admission is free.

Sunday, June 11

Worship in the Park will begin at 10:30 a.m., but come early, bring a chair, and fellowship with each other starting at 10 a.m.
