Grizzly freshmen stop Riverside to complete winning streak
The Rocky Mountain Grizzly boys freshman/C team wrapped up a successful 2023-24 season Monday night with a 43-33 win at Riverside High School in Basin, extending the team’s winning streak to six games.
Riverside took a 9-8 lead after the first quarter, but Rocky dominated the second 13-6 to lead 21-15 at halftime. Riverside had the edge in the third quarter, 11-7, but the Grizzlies carried the fourth 15-7 to win by 10.
Kellan Jackson scored 9 points for the Grizz in the final quarter and led the team with 15 points. Joaquin Scheeler and Rylan Stebner added 12 points each, Jacob Melton 2.
“Our game against Riverside was a grind,” coach Taylor Winland said. “It was an ugly 3½ quarters of basketball for both sides, at times. Riverside played a 2-3, and our offense was stagnant at times. With about four minutes to go in the fourth quarter, Kellan put together a great run by posting up and finishing hard at the rim.”
The Grizzlies finished with a 7-4 record, including the six-game winning streak over Cody, Greybull, Burlington, Lovell, Cody again and Riverside.
“It was a great season,” Winland said. “We have definitely grown from the start of the season. We started playing our best ball in the second half of the season, ending on the six-game win streak. I challenged the boys to get in the gym and helped them understand that individuals get better in the summer, and November through March is when we, as a team, get better.”
