Lady Grizz look strong while hosting tournament

The Lady Grizz hosted the Rocky Mountain Invitational volleyball tournament over the weekend and looked sharp. The tournament did result in mixed wins and losses, however, coach Kay Townsend said, “Our girls played well. I was thrilled how smoothly the girls played together as a team, each knowing their own role on the team and taking charge of those roles.”

The varsity team swept Meeteetse 25-17, 25-14 in their first match, adding confidence to the squad. The Lady Grizz carried that confidence into their second opponent, Riverside, Friday afternoon, winning 25-15, 25-13.

Greybull proved to be a challenge for the girls Friday evening. Giving Rocky their first losses of the season, the Lady Buffs swept the sets. The first set was a nail-biter ending with a score of 25-21, and the next set ended with a score of 25-16. Townsend said the Lady Grizz struggled a bit with the serve receive at times, contributing to the loss to Greybull, however, the team is ready to work on that this week during practice.

Rocky Mountain went on to beat Dubois 25-23 in the first set and 25-18 in the second. 

Burlington also proved to be a worthy opponent. The Lady Grizz won the first set 25-24, and the second set was also very close, ending in a loss for Rocky Mountain with a score of 25-24. And a short third set ended the tournament with a score of 15-14 in favor of the Lady Huskies.

Townsend highlighted several members of the team who played well throughout the tournament. Sawyer Bassett led the team with 21 kills, and Halle Grandalen had 18, Bailey Gifford and Kaysie Cooley eight each and Charlee Welling two.

The Lady Grizz will travel to play a tournament at Wind River this weekend with matches Friday and Saturday.
