Lovell Elementary students honored for Character Counts essays
Students at Lovell Elementary School were recognized for essays they wrote for the school’s annual Character Counts essay contest.
Preceding the submission of an essay, a Character Counts Week was held. Throughout the week, which was held in October, teachers led discussion about what it means to have good character. The week culminated with students writing essays about the importance of good character in their lives and what good character looks like for them.
Second grader Penelope Hall stated that she shows her character by having pride in her school and being a positive member of it.
“I work very hard and never give up. I help others when they need it. I try to be a good friend and sister. I try my best,” Hall wrote. “I try to agree. I learn from mistakes. I have the best school ever. I appreciate my family and friends. I love and care for people. These are ways I show Bulldog pride.”
Second grader Eleanor Kitchen said she shows Bulldog pride and great character by showing positive spirit.
“I can have Bulldog pride by showing people respect and kindness and giving kids the heart of laughter on a sad day for them,” Kitchen wrote. “I also give parents and kids a joyful day. I play games fair, and when I get tagged or lose a game I always smile and say ‘ah, dang it!’ I respect teachers and never quit.”
Third grader Mylee Peterson said having good character is a matter of perseverance and asking for help when it’s needed.
“I’m going to teach you how to be a (good) character,” Peterson wrote. “First, you need to work hard and never give up. Even if you are having a hard time, you can get help. Second, if you are feeling like this and it doesn’t feel right, then you can go ask for help. You can ask the teacher or your siblings.”
Lovell Elementary fifth grader Olivia Rael spoke about integrity in her essay.
“We need to have integrity with our peers,” Rael wrote. “If we don’t have integrity with our peers, then no one will want to be around you. We also need to have integrity no matter what. If we don’t have integrity, then some people might not always think we’re the kindest.”
