The Lovell Bulldogs freshman boys basketball team won its third straight game Tuesday night as the team traveled to Burlington and took down the Huskies in an overtime thriller, 47-45.
“We had our opportunities to take care of the game in regulation that we failed to do,” Lovell freshman coach Michael Jameson said. “But I’m glad we were able to walk away with the win.”
Nate Cornia led the team in scoring with 12, and Jaden Clark was right behind him with 11. Rocco Rael finished with 6, Sam Mayes and Wilson Hendershot 5 and Declan Mayes 4, while Cash Wassmer and Tazz McArthur each had 2.
“We need to continue to work on blocking out and rebounding to be successful,” Jameson continued.
Last week, the freshman boys made the trip to Worland on Thursday and took down the Warriors 45-37.
“We played pretty well, and we were able to knock down some decent shots in Worland,” Jameson said.
Sam Mayes had the hot hand with 17 on the night. Cornia finished with 11, Wassmer 4, Hendershot 3 and Clark, McArthur, Rael and Dean Anderson 2 each.
The two games, combined with an earlier win against Greybull, has brought the Lovell Bulldog freshmen’s winning streak to three games in a row.
Girls games
The Lovell Lady Bulldog freshmen, traveled to Worland Thursday and came up short, falling 38-31 to the Lady Warriors.
Lovell had balanced scoring led by Hannity Felkins with 7, and Kira Collins finished with 6, Jenna Hessenthaler 5, Brooklin Clark 4, Kindle Collins and Kaydree Owens 3, Kenley Wilson 2 and Kandace Asay 1.
“We had to run with some different lineups and failed to execute as effectively,” freshman girls coach Dan Wolvington said.
The Lady Bulldogs got back on track on Tuesday when they headed to Burlington and faced the Lady Huskies, winning 47-38.
Kira Collins poured in 12 points, and both Kindle Collins and Asay ended with 8. Owens scored 7, Hessenthaler 4, and Felkins and Clark both had 3.
“The girls played better in Burlington,” Wolvington said. “We still need to tune up some defensive concepts, but the girls are playing hard.”
Looking ahead
The freshman girls don’t have games the rest of the week, but the freshman boys will travel with the JV and varsity teams to Thermopolis on Friday to tip off at 5:30 p.m. during the varsity girls action.
