Six students on the Lovell-Rocky Mountain high school speech and debate team traveled to Cheyenne March 13-15 for the 2025 WHSAA State Speech and Debate Tournament.
In one of the initial four rounds, Lovell senior Matthew Allen competed in Impromptu. He was given a topic and seven minutes to prepare and present his piece. He placed second in one of the first four rounds.
Rocky Mountain sophomore Lilian Wenstrom competed in Program Oral Interpretation with a piece titled “We Were Best of Friends.” She placed second in one of the initial rounds.
Lovell sophomore Lilly Keele competed in Informative Speaking with a piece titled “Split Brain Surgery and the Left-Brain Interpreter.” She placed third and second in two of the first four rounds of competition.
“We had a really great team this year,” coach Heather Mickelson said. “Many of them are freshmen and sophomores, and they did a phenomenal job with their writing and performing their pieces. I can’t wait to see what they are capable of accomplishing in the next few years.
“Our motto this year has been ‘You are winning, or you are learning.’ I feel like we won a few trophies, and we definitely learned a lot.”
